Better as in cheaper but inferior in quality? or same capability different brand but in the same price range ? Or are you asking about the different types of FL ?
Cheap, well go for standard flourescent lamps usually labelled as "daylight" or "cool white".... you could get them for a few dollars each... For 4' tank, it's usually 3' long, T8 and rated at around 30 watts each. Don't recommend the high output version as their lifespan is drastically reduced and is hard to find in common lighting shops/stores.... Same price range with around same capability, e.g covers correct plant light spectrum and has removed color spectrum that "promote" algae growth" , you can try the dennerle lights. Available at some aquarium stores. Types of FL ? well it's the size that matters, namely T5,T8 or T12.... T5 is the smallest and thus can pack more of the light bulbs in the same space. T means "tubular" and the number 5,8.12 refers to the ratio of the tube's diameter. E.g T5 is 5/8 of an inch, T8 is 8/8 or exactly one inch in diameter... There's a lot of discussion on lights in the planted forum, do a search here. Quote:
