SINGAPORE: Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong is hosting a "live" TV forum, engaging a panel of 12 Singaporeans from a cross-section of the population on a wide range of topics.

The forum will be shown "live" at 8pm on Channel NewsAsia next Tuesday on April 12.

The hour-long programme is called "Question Time with the Prime Minister" and topics for discussion include social, political and long term issues facing Singapore.

MediaCorp said for the first time, viewers are invited to send in their questions for the Prime Minister during the forum via SMS or email and he will address some of the questions during the"live" programme.

The microsite for the programme at channelnewsasia.com/questiontime is now available for viewers to send in their queries for the forum. Online viewers can also catch the webcast "live" at the microsite.

In addition, netizens can choose to put in their messages on Facebook.com/questiontime.

Channel NewsAsia Presenter, Melissa Hyak, is moderating the discussions with the panel representing many sectors of society.

They include a grassroots leader, a unionist, a businessman, a young professional, a polytechnic student, a university student, a retiree, a blue-collar worker, a political commentator, a journalist, a social worker and a new citizen of Singapore.

Executive Producer Tan Lek Hwa, said: "With election excitement in the air, we want to provide another platform for the man in the street to be able to give voice to the questions or comments that they have always wanted to air, but never had the opportunity.

"Together with the good cross section of representatives that we have lined up on the panel, the diverse mix of views and questions should make for a robust discussion with the Prime Minister."

The forum will telecast at the following times: Channel NewsAsia on Tuesday, April 12, 8pm (Sin/HK) with encore telecasts on Friday, April 15, 6pm (Sin/HK) and Sunday, April 17, 7.30pm (Sin/HK). It will also be shown on Channel 5 on Friday, April 15 at 8.30pm.

In short, ask ONLY what you are asked to ask, strictly nothing else.

Talk simi talk... U don't cut the nagging voice behind his ears talk also lppl lah.

He knows... and can't do anything abt it becos the father legacy.

We know... and we can do something abt it... axe GCT... and we will be doing LHL a huge service.

I guess LHL will be smiling gratefully, humbled with pride when he goes to bed after... thinking he has a nation of people smarter than he thought.

GCT can finally go make his wife peel peanut skin. Who's kidding who... I told my wife... please lah...

And with all the spare time he needs to grin away... let him go down in history as the man who excites a nation into nehneh movies... claiming medisave his original ingenious thinking... the peanut fiasco... and nothing else.

Not everything debatable in public: PM Lee

SINGAPORE: Singapore's political system may have become more open, but there are limits to what can be debated in public.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said this at an hour-long forum televised on Channel NewsAsia on Tuesday.

The forum, called Question Time with the Prime Minister, also saw him taking questions via Facebook and SMS.

It was an hour of animated and frank debate between the prime minister and 12 participants spanning a cross-section of society.

With a General Election (GE) expected soon, the forum kicked off with questions on the parliamentary and electoral system.

Some said they felt the system of Non-Constituency and Nominated MPs was unfair.

To which, Mr Lee said the NCMP system actually allowed opposition MPs to gain more visibility among voters.

When asked why politics in Singapore seemed so adversarial in nature, Mr Lee said the country has come a long way since the "hammer and tongs" climate of the communist threat.

But he said a democratic system was inherently adversarial, and there are risks to it.

That is why the PAP has developed into a party that takes in all views.

"The IR is one good example, where we had a very intense debate, but in the end, it's not that we overruled Lim Boon Heng," Mr Lee said.

"He said he was against IRs, but when he looked at the case and what the IRs could bring to us, in the end, (he said) I could not say no to 25,000 or 30,000 jobs. So that was what made him emotional".

It was also the first time the prime minister was taking questions on Facebook and SMS during a live television forum.

Some asked about help for older Singaporeans.

Others were concerned about the impact of foreigners on the young.

Ngee Ann Polytechnic student Matthew Zachary Liu said: "We acknowledge that the country is progressing, but we feel that we are being left behind.

"And what we feel from the government is, you either catch up or you die, because you don't expect the government to save you".

Mr Lee said: "You are not being left behind. You're starting off at the starting block, and the race is ahead of you.

"And we've equipped you, you've got good running shoes, you've got good gear, you've got good training.

"In Singapore, we make sure you have the best chance possible because the competition isn't the foreigner who might be here. It's the millions who are in the other places, and they are competing with us whether we like it or not".

With the rising cost of living looking to be a hot topic for the election, some wondered if the Goods and Services Tax would be raised further.

In reply, Mr Lee said he doubted it, so long as the Budget remained prudent, and the economy remained in shape.

Referring to the manifestos put out recently by several political parties, he said: "they (the opposition) say they want to spend on this, and spend on that, and have a needs-based welfare system and a nationalised bus service and all that.

"And then they wave their hands and say, we have enough money to pay. Then you must ask yourself, how are you going to pay for this?

"When you spend money like that, then you have to worry about governments raising the GST".

Question

Just a thot... What if GST is raised to 10% in order to subsidised/control cost of public transportation, education and welfare ? Would this be a fair trade-off ? All else being constant ...

Ur GST is lump in together with the rest and it will disappear into an avenue the world's top debator need only spew words to bend ur arms over....

Times have change... the safer bet is to get rid of king talk mentality... which borders on blinded power kleptocracy.

Does it sound right for govt to subsidise and control fare of a listed transport company like SMRT?
