My all blackie Ranchu
I have this all black ranchu which shape like a Japanese koban.
Being a newbie, I would like to ask the guru here is this a fine grade ranchu? What should I do and feed the ranchu with to maintain the black colour? |

Looks good from top. I would like to share some my experience. You can feed almost anything what other gf eat but avoid color enhancers, they can even turn them bronze. As far as belly being black it's concern, I think it's all in the genes. I've Chinese blackies in all water conditions..ie. GW with sunlight, CW with lots of w/cs, wall algae or spotless tanks. Results about the same other than sunlight which makes their top very black. When kept indoors try to have lighting for 10hrs, keep water in very good condition and salt 0.3% every 3mths for about 10days or so (encourage lime coat exchange) but don't keep them in salt all the time. Outdoors, just let nature takes it's course lah. (I'm about to post my indoor blackies updates soon).

Ya, the 3rd pic abit gold due to reflection from the gold scale when I shine a touch from the side while taking pic with my iphone.
UnSun, I like your chubby black ranchu. R u refering to the spirulina colour enchancer? I fed all the gold/red/white ranchus including the black with Hikari Lionhead which contain spirulina. Very difficult just the black everytime during feeding. Some say spirulina will cause the black to fade some say don't as it is due to genetic and sunlight. I am confused! Now trying to pump them up with various diet like peas, bw and pellet. Fed them up to 8 times a day with the amount they are able to finish within 15 secs |

The Hikari feed contains spirulina but it does not effect the back at all. The tank is away from direct sunlight. Pink light 18w is turn on everyday for about 5 hours. One month ago, I made a mistake by putting in a upside down catfish in the goldfish tank. The next morning, I got a rude shock, my blackie has gold poker dots all over its body and my wife couldn't stop laughing seeing it. The catfish feed on the slimecoat when there is no wall algae. After removing the catfish for a week, my blackie recover to all black beauty again. I believe it is not the food that cause the black to fade. The gene play the most important part. Will upload a recent pic if I have the time. |

very nice blackies.
i just bought 2 today. can ask how to growth the head, not counting the genetic consideration, i. e. food to feed best other than bw cos i tried that and it makes no difference. thnks so much. |
