Yes very much possible! I having plants in the sump.
Easy plants like riccia, japonica, nana, some small stem plants which I do not know the names.
Lightings just the normal t5. 5 hours light, 3 hours off and 5 hours light again. The rest is darkness.
I may try to take some pic over the weekend.

Thanks bro. It is definietly sump tank. I started off with only hornwort only hoping to bring down nitrate for my red aro above (main tank). Once i started it became almost an obession and then goes to having container fill with aqua soil and many japonica and some stem plants. Not satisfied, i deco it and try to do it with the sump pump putting into box and fill directly with aqua soil. Now strict regime of flourish and iron weekly. Before weekly wc now 3 week once wc.

The aqua soil will not go into the main tank? Your sump looks very clean, do you need to wipe the glass?

I got a box just enough for the sump pump to go in. Cover it with foam sponge at the top. The aqua soil is fill in the sump tank and the box keep the soil out. This way the soil will not be suck back into main tank.
I wipe the glass when i do the wc at the main tank.

So far ammonia and nitrite has not go above 0 for many months now. So i guess it does not kill bacteria.
