All you need to know about the three additional trophies Liverpool are now chasing this year

It's a case of one down, three to go when it comes to Liverpool and a potential trophy trail in 2019.

Although the Reds' search for the coveted League Championship now stretches into a third decade after Manchester City pipped them by a single point to top spot, the acquisition of an even greater prize – a sixth European cup – has ensured that Jurgen Klopp's side now have the opportunity to land a further hat-trick in the silverware stakes later this year.

Here's a look at the three other trophies they could land before the end of the calendar year.

The FA Community Shield

Date: August. The date is yet to be confirmed, but is expected to be the weekend of Saturday 3rd/Sunday 4th.

Location: Wembley Stadium, London.

Opponents: Manchester City.

What is it? The FA Community Shield is the traditional annual curtain-raiser to the new English football season.

It was called the Charity Shield until but was renamed in 2002 after the Charity Commission found that the FA had failed to meet its legal obligations under charity law.

First played in 1908, it has since 1930 been standardised as a contest between the League Champions and FA Cup winners from the previous season – apart from in 1950 when the England's first World Cup-bound squad defeated a Canadian FA Touring Team.

In years in which one club completes a domestic League and FA Cup double (like Manchester City achieved last month), then they take on the top flight's runners-up, hence Liverpool's inclusion.

What is Liverpool's record like? Liverpool have won the Shield on 10 occasions (including once in a penalty shoot-out against Leeds United in 1974); shared the Shield five times and lost on six occasions.

Their first participation was a 1-0 defeat to Huddersfield Town at Old Trafford in 1922; their first win was 1-0 against Everton at Goodison Park in 1966 when addition to the League Championship and FA Cup trophies being displayed, the World Cup was present courtesy of Roger Hunt and Ray Wilson, while their last appearance was a 2-1 win over Chelsea at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium in 2006.

UEFA Super Cup

Date: Wednesday August 14 with an 8pm kick-off UK time.

Location: Vodafone Park, Istanbul (41,188 capacity) which is the home of Turkish club Besiktas.

Opponents: Chelsea.

What is it? A European version of the Community Shield basically as the winners of UEFA's two club competitions from the previous season face off against each other.

First contested in 1973, it used to be played between the winners of the European Cup and the European Cup-Winners' Cup but after the latter competition was discontinued in 1999, from 2000 onwards, the winners of the UEFA Cup/Europa League have taken part.

Until 1998, the games were usually played on a home-and-away two-legged format – apart from Liverpool's 2-0 defeat to Turin in 1984 – but were then switched to a one-off game.

From 1998-2012 the matches were held at the Stade Louis II in Monaco but since 2013 they have moved around the continent, often to smaller venues that would not be able to host Champions League or Europa League finals.

What is Liverpool's record like? Liverpool have contested the cup on five occasions but did not play after lifting the 1981 European Cup when they would have faced Soviet side Dinamo Tblisi who had secured that year's Cup-Winners' Cup.

They have won the cup three times and lost twice, including the aforementioned defeat at Juventus that was unique in the two-legged era.

Their other loss was to Anderlecht in 1978 while their victories came against Hamburg (1977); Bayern Munich (2001) and CSKA Moscow (2005).

FIFA Club World Cup

Date: To be confirmed. FIFA only announced on Monday that this year's edition was taking place after previous reports that it would be held back to take place only once every four years. Since the game was revived in its current format in 2005 though it has always taken place in December.

Location: Qatar. The 80,000 Lusail Iconic Stadium where the 2022 World Cup final is scheduled to take place is still being built so it looks like the game will take place at the 40,000 capacity Khalifa International Stadium which has been the home of the Qatari national team since 1976.

Opponents: Liverpool will be one of seven clubs taking part and they enter last at the semi-final stage.

The competition has four rounds and starts with a play-off between Al-Sadd from hosts Qatar against the OFC (Oceania) Champions League winners Hienghene Sport from New Caledonia – unless they win the former win the AFC (Asian) Champions League in which the runners-up will take their place.

Mexican outfit Monterrey and Tunisian side Esperance de Tunis have already booked their places in the quarter-finals as winners of the 2019 CONCACAF (North and Central American) Champions League and CAF (African) Champions League respectively.

The remaining places will go to the winners of the Copa Libertadores in South America and AFC Champions League – both of which are currently at the last 16 stage while their finals take place on November 23 and 24 respectively.

What is it? A competition in which the champion clubs of each continent face each other to determine the world's best club side.

What is Liverpool's record like? Surprisingly poor. Despite their five previous European Cup wins, they have never been crowned world club champions in any of the competition's various guises.

Rafa Benitez's side played in the first edition of the current format in Japan in 2005, easing past Saprissa of Costa Rica 3-0 in the semi-final but losing 1-0 to Brazilians Sao Paulo in the final.

Between 1960-2004, there was the annual Intercontinental Cup between the champions of Europe and South America which was considered a de facto world club championship.

After winning their first European Cup in 1977, Liverpool didn't even bother entering and instead runners-up Borussia Monchengladbach took their place, losing over two legs to Boca Juniors from Buenos Aires in Argentina.

The following year Boca Juniors were Copa Libertadores winners again but no game at all took place.

With the competition moving to a one-off game in Japan the previous year, in 1981 Liverpool finally took their place but were beaten 3-0 by Flamengo from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

In 1984 they returned to Tokyo but lost 1-0 to Independiente from Avellaneda in Greater Buenos Aires.

James Milner's incredible gesture to Hillsborough survivor after Liverpool's Champions League parade

James Milner got Liverpool's open top bus to stop outside the house of a Hillsborough survivor so he could show him the European Cup.

The moving gesture by the club's vice-captain took place following the end of the Reds' victory parade around the city on Sunday which attracted a crowd in excess of 750,000.

The bus was heading back to Melwood just after 8pm when Milner requested that it stopped outside the south Liverpool home of Andrew Devine.

The 53-year-old has been confined to a wheelchair since the serious injuries he suffered at Hillsborough in 1989.

When the bus pulled up, Andrew was outside and Milner leant over the side of the bus to show him the gleaming trophy.

Andrew's mother Hilary told the ECHO: "It was a very kind gesture and it made Andrew's day."

The Liverpool midfielder had previously met Andrew during visits to the Melwood training ground.

It was a classy touch by Milner, who came off the bench in Madrid to help the Reds secure their sixth European crown with a 2-0 win over Tottenham.

Andrew was a devoted 22-year-old Liverpool fan from Mossley Hill, who was working for the Post Office, when he attended the FA Cup semi-final at Hillsborough back in 1989.

After his chest was crushed and his brain deprived of oxygen, he was put on a life support machine and wasn't expected to survive the day.

However, 30 years on he lives in the family home in Liverpool with devoted parents Stanley and Hilary with the help of 24-hour professional care.

Default Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk overtakes Lionel Messi in Ballon d'Or stakes

Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk has overtaken Lionel Messi as the favourite to win the Ballon d’Or, following his impressive performance for the Netherlands against England last night.

In fact, bookmakers now make it odds-on that he scoops the most prestigious individual award in world football.

Back in May, Van Dijk was installed as a 7/1 shot to win the award, although that’s now been cut to just 8/11 with multiple bookies.

That’s due to a spate of bets on the centre back, with 46% of all bets in the last 24 hours and 42% of all bets in the past week.

Van Dijk followed up an imperious display in the Reds 2-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League final with a strong showing in the Dutch national side's 3-1 extra time victory over England in the second UEFA Nations League semi-final in the Portuguese city of Guimaraes.

Ronald Koeman's side will now face the hosts in the final on Sunday night (7:45pm) after a Cristiano Ronaldo hat-trick downed Switzerland 3-1.

Barcelona’s Lionel Messi has been pushed out to 6/5 to be crowned the best individual player in the world, in what is essentially a two-horse race.

The third most likely is another Liverpool player in the shape of Sadio Mane , but the forward is 20/1 to beat van Dijk and Messi.

Yet another of Jürgen Klopp’s men comes next in the shape of Mohamed Salah (20/1), who edges ahead of the aforementioned five-time winner Ronaldo (25/1).

Oddschecker spokesperson Callum Wilson said: “Virgil van Dijk’s imperious performances for both club and country this season have not just been noticed by fans, but by punters in equal measure.

“A spate of bets on the Liverpool stalwart has seen him overtake the consensus best player in the world, Lionel Messi, for the first time this season.

“Luca Modric proved last year that it is possible to break the Messi-Ronaldo stranglehold and punters will be watching closely to see if a certain Dutchman can repeat the feat."

Ballon d'Or winner:

Virgil van Dijk - 8/11

Lionel Messi - 6/5

Sadio Mane - 20/1

Mohammed Salah - 20/1

Cristiano Ronaldo - 25/1

Raheem Sterling - 25/1

Eden Hazard - 40/1
