5th National Flowerhorn Competition in Singapore

The 5th National Flowerhorn Competition organized by Flowerhorn Club Singapore will be held from 10 to 13 July 2014 at Block 697A between Hougang St 52 and St 61, with the support of the Hougang Village Merchants Association. .

This competition is open to all flowerhorn enthusiasts in Singapore and overseas.

The competition is based on an Open Category comprising 3 Classes (A, B & C) which mean that any types of flowerhorn (be it zhen zhu, malau, kamfa, golden-base, free-marking, classic or x-breeds like zzml, kfml, zzkf, etc ) can take part. The scoring system has been developed and fine-tuned to give every breed an equal chance to win.

3 highly qualified judges from Malaysia and Indonesia have been invited to judge this competition. These judges have in-depth knowledge on the development, keeping and grooming of flowerhorns and have been selected for their professionalism and impartiality in assessing the standards of flowerhorns.

As the person who is in charge of the whole event and in the name of fair play, I will not be entering any fishes in this competition; nor will I lend my fishes to others to enter.

Entry Fee
The entry fee for this competition is S$50 per fish for Flowerhorn Club members, sponsors and overseas participants; and S$80 for public and non Flowerhorn Club members. The entry fees have been raised for this competition due to the high cost of organising fish competitions in Singapore. Even with the increase, the Club is still subsidizing entries because funds raised from sponsors are insufficient to cover the total cost of organising the competition. Without subsidy, cost of each entry would have been in the region of $120 - $150.

Dear competition participants,

With only two weeks to go before the competition starts, here are some pointers to help you to prepare your fish for the competition:

Condition your fish by playing with it with your fingers (so that it will get used to human presence at comp venue); on your tank light for prolong period (for it to get used to the lighting of comp tank) and move it in and out of your tank (to let your fish get used to being moved to comp venue and shifting into new tank on bench-in day).
Trim the “hair” at the end of the fins so that the tip of the fins are in line with the end of the tail. Do it early and do not cut too drastically because the cuts should not be obvious to the judges.
Hang mirror or paste cut-out picture of a flowerhorn on your tank for short periods daily to encourage your fish to flare (remember to bring these 2 items to the competition venue during bench-in to help your fish recover from its journey there and let it settle down in the tank faster).
Increase the frequency in feeding of fish (with moderate amount in each feed) to pump it up. Stop feeding completely 2 – 3 days before bench-in so that your fish won’t fill the comp tank with its excretion (imagine what impression your fish will give to the judges if its tank is full of shit). After the judging session, you will be allowed to feed your fish moderately but you should seek permission from the officials on duty first.
Monitor your fish’s health and increase frequency of water and filter wool changes. If you spot any minor sickness, apply appropriate medication immediately.

Remember this: Just like athletes in sports events, your fish needs to be trained in order for it to perform to its best during the competition.
