running for one year may not mean it is stable as a new setup. unless you are using it as it is. if you had made any changes to the tank setup interms of water parameters, then it is better to run it up to a week before adding livestock to let it stabilise again as the filter might need time to adapt.

as for shells, if you are not breeding them, even adults also dont need shells. in fact, without shells, they dont hide as much.

they may n will fight over a particular shell at times even if there are more shells around....which may/will result in casualty/injuries/deformity....

Bro, both are consider rock dweller just that altos breed in shell. The fish you are buying looks like juvenile, should be fun to handle and raise. Like what ym & gyjd mentioned, unless altos are ready for breeding, you need not provide shell for them to create unnecessary fighting.
If you are interested, you can come over my place to have a tcss session

As Wildbear have suggested, to pay him a visit. A visitation of 1~2 hrs can dramatically change and learn much. IMO, yr 2X1.5ft tank is too small and can accommodate little. 2ft tanks are best for breeding pair (brichardi, etc) or fries grow out tank or shellies colony....so there's not really many choices you have. As for the leleupis + altos, its fine u purchase and let them 'grow out' now, but in 3~6 months time you will have much headaches once they grow bigger and 'fight'....and tank is so small there is nowhere to run or hide....so die.
