Default Beginner Shrimp setup

Hi All,

After 3 months of studying on the shrimp setup and habitat, gaining information from bros and website, I have embarked on my new setup on my shrimp tank.

The method adopted with this setup is for the ease of cleaning the bottom tank, rather than having to disturb the soil to remove debris/uneaten food, etc.

Note that the filtration media in the tank is solely the sponge filter only. I am trying to minimize further equipment and hopefully with this setup can hold as much shrimp. This will be further monitor.

Setup info:
1) Chiller - Hailea 28A
2) SS piping - for future expansion capability
3) ADA Amazonia soil
4) Waterlife bacteria
5) Mr aqua Trays fill with CR
6) Sponge filter
7) 3ftx1.5x1.5ft tank
8) Beamworks 3ft LED

Tank has been cycling with all medias for a 3 weeks.

Currently water parameters:
1) PH - 5.5
2) TDS - 130
3) NH3/NO2/NO3/KH/GH - Unknown
4) Temp - 25degC (difference by 1degC from the chiller setpoint of 24degC)

Full tank shot

Using of 316 SS piping - note this is a different pipe as shown in the above pix

Hope for your comments.

Would just a simple sponge filter be enough?

So far with only 6 shrimps, everything is fine. I am just pushing to see how many shrimps can this setup hold as well as the duration.

Hella Bro.

I've always been very curious as to why some people opt to do the bare tank setup? In your research, did you discover that the mostly bare tank fair better than a substrate tank?

I understand the concept that a bare tank = easier to clean waste. But isn't a tank ultimately a closed eco-system and the person should aim to balance the tank out as much as possible instead of aiming for waste reduction?

Hi Bro, so far with this setup, I do not need to disturb the soil as the food is place at the bottom. I am not aiming for a closed eco-system but just a system for shrimp to strive and ease of maintenance. I am doing WC every week ard 10-20% to ensure better quality of water.

There are recent promoting of the shrimp setup where famous Taiwanese breeder will partition 1/3 of the tank and have the substrate placed behind and leaving the front bare. My believe this is for similar purpose as well.

Hope this explains my doing.

Hi Bro,

Are you referring to having an undergravel or water circulation in between the trays?

I prefer to use 2 sponge filter so I can't rotate when doing washing of sponge filter.
