Dust collecting on water surface. (Need help)
Hi,
I have this problem of a later of dust collecting on the water surface(Probably caused by the aquarium fan blowing). I can't use a normal skimmer as it is a shrimp tank. I have been manually skimming the water surface with a water bottle daily to get rid of the dust. But this is a term solution. I try raising the rain bar to push the dust under water so that it can be pick up by the filter but it doesn't help the rain bar just push the dust around. Is there any skimmer that is shrimp safe (I've been searching but can't find any) or is there any DIY that I can do the the normal skimmer to make it shrimp safe? Need help here. Filtration is Ehiem 2028 Canister Filter, Inlet (Sponge covered), Outlet (Rain bar) Closer view on the dust collected on water surface. Thank you. |

You can use eheim surface skimmer with the toggle valve. Just turn on for a while once a day to clear the top layer.

Do you mean Ehiem 350 surface skimmer? Shrimp will still be at risk even if I on it for a while everyday, shrimps are curious creature and will climb into all the opening when it is off and will become shrimp paste when i on the filter.
But I am going to check that skimmer out later. Want to check if I can modify it to become shrimp safe. |

u can try those stationary type
like the one i use before. Drake surface acrylic skimmer DK-10c (East ocean got sell) - the one without the moveable top. as small ones still can go thru the gap. go for the i pc body kind. those metal type ones i think also can use as long as the top part is tall over the surface w small enough gaps should do. |

Hi, thanks for the input. But I already bought the Ehiem 350 Skim before I saw your recommendation. If not I will have one more option. From what I see, the Ehiem will need 2 add on to be shrimp safe and effective. Not sure if it will work but lets try.

I tried eheim 350 before. Suck my feeder goldfish in before. And I didn't use the sponge.
How I realised, the fish in, mince meat out. So I can say it is not safe.... To me at least for shrimps |

How about you try adding 1 or 2 air stones inside the tank? Agitating the surface should help...

After much contemplation,
I made myself an overflow box. For shrimps... I suggest use tissue method. |
