Sometimes is the male want to breed the female not ready, then kena whack... sometimes is breed already the female turn defensive in protecting her brood and whack the previously dominant male. Some apistos are harem breeders and easier to pair up....others form bonded pairs and kill several potential mates before finally forming a bond.
Don't you just love apistos? |

Say if using a 2ft, can have a half dozen tetras max as dither.
Enough to make the apistos not so shy but not too many to stress them during spawning and fry care. If want super fry friendly, have dwarf rasboras and otos instead of tetras. |

Tetras are always a risk I find leh. Otos, pencilfish and boraras are safe.
I've had experience where I saw my school of 5 ruby tetras (one of the smallest tetras around) work together to pick off fry. 3 of them would distract the guarding female and get her to chase them away while the remaining 2 took the chance to grab a temporarily unguarded baby each. Happened super fast and the mum was unable to stop them. She eventually did manage to kill all the tetras, but not before losing a number of her brood. This is one of the only times I actually saw intelligent behaviour from tetras. I usually think they're pretty dumb, especially compared to cichlids. |

Could be.
Anyway, had no spare tank so threw my new bit pair into my neglected guppy tank I use to cultivate duckweed and frogbits. 1 guppy bit the dust this morning .... At least another 30++ inside though. |
