Default Filteration setup for saltwater

I am thinking of starting a new project to convert saltwater juvenile garoupas to freshwater but hoping to recycle some of my fw setup in this process as it involves a tank that is currently housing fw fish.

Have a few questions before I embark on the journey...

Currently am using an Eheim pro canister filter, can it be used in sw? The media (mainly ceramic rings and biohome) in there, are they effective in sw?

Any replies will be appreciated
