I believe the crux of the issue is whether AHPETC requested the hawkers to pay for the cleaning and the facts do not seem to be clear yet.

At this juncture, it appears that NEA is still unable to justify its claims.

the hawker association, the nea officers are just pawns.... to their masters.

well let the citizens of singapore judge for themselves. if WP is that screwed up, they will get their "punishment" in next GE. likewise for PAP.

It's diff departments in NEA dealing wif the diff cases.... NEA got many many dept leh. I think it's just as impt for hawker cleanliness as well

I just find that WP could have handled the incident better. And find out more from the Hawkers themselves instead of relying on assumptions.

And as of now.. is 2 hawkers association who have raised issues with WP?

SINGAPORE: Minister for the Environment and Water Resources Dr Vivian Balakrishnan said it is "arrogant and wrong" of town council chairman Ms Sylvia Lim to make a political attack on National Environment Agency (NEA) officers for simply doing their job.

In a media statement released Sunday evening, Dr Balakrishnan said this is a "completely unnecessary distraction caused by the Aljunied-Hougang-Punggol East Town Council (AHPETC) and its managing agent FMSS."

All town councils, he said, have always done routine spring-cleaning of hawker centres and there is no excuse for the town council (AHPETC) to delay the current cleaning programme as the safety of the public must remain the paramount concern.

Dr Balakrishnan said hawkers are honest, hardworking people just trying to make a living and there is no reason to charge hawkers more for cleaning the ceiling.

He said there is no reason to disrupt their business.

The hawkers, he noted, have been consistent and truthful throughout this entire episode, and “it's obvious they are speaking the truth”.

NEA civil servants, he added, are duty-bound to protect public hygiene and ensure hawkers are treated fairly.

He asked the town council to cooperate with NEA, and consult closely with the hawkers and fulfill its obligations.

ARROGANT? I guess everyone knows WHO is the arrogant one here (3 meals of peanut maybe). Now he is trying to stir the hawker's emotions huh?? Anyway, hawkers are hardworking, but I don't think much about honesty.

So, who else is going to throw in their lot? Where is KHAW BOON WAN who always has something to say where WP is concern?
no reason to disrupt the hawkers' business? so the cleaning can be done at nite and the hawkers can open for biz everyday? then why are every hawker centers close for a day for cleaning every few months? isnt that disrupting their business? like this must look into how all the TCs operate liao.

Since this is a cost bear by town council. My assumption is that definitely it will be a cheaper quotation if the job is done on a weekday working hours instead of a job that is done in midnight or odd hours. Contractors need to pay extra or OT for their workers for jobs in odd hours.

Anyway i hope and think this is a miscommunication by NEA and town council. Surely with WP running Hougang for so long, they should know what is their obligation with regards to cleaning hawker center. But NEA supposed email to say that scaffolding will be provided but did not state that only scaffold for individual stall.

So Ajunied town council take it that scaffolding for the whole cleaning process.

An act by NEA to sabotage or an honest mistake ? We won't know...

Suddenly all these MP and Minister sound like KNIGHTS in armour trying to save hawkers (civilians) from paying the no reason extra charges...

If they so concern don't keep raising price of so many thing such as hawker rental, hospitalisation fee, reduce water tax, electricity charges, property price, transport fares.... ..etc we very happy already.

Can talk to the people and definitely to the birds.

Talking is free ma. Works are customized according to what the situation called for that day.
