wonder what are the chance that WP will be gracious and pull out of the BE and let other opposition have a go. they can always try for it again in GE.

Yes, WP garnered 41.01% in GE2011 for Punggol East SMC. So why would they leave? If they leaves, the residents who voted for them will feel disappointed, or kind of 'betrayed'. (http://www.ge.sg/results/smc/)
--------------------------------- Latest Ooi Boon Ewe intends to run in Punggol East by-election By Kimberly Spykerman | Posted: 10 January 2013 1237 hrs 71-year-old Ooi Boon Wee plans to run as an independent candidate in the Punggol East by-election (photo: Francine Lim, channelnewsasia.com) SINGAPORE: The man who failed in his bids to contest in the 2011 General and Presidential elections said he'll be back as an independent candidate in the Punggol East by-election, set for 26 January. Mr Ooi Boon Ewe, 71, was the first to show up at the Elections Department at 10:40am on Thursday to collect the nomination papers. He told reporters that he's running for the seat, as politics is in his blood. Mr Ooi, who lives in Sengkang and is self-employed, said he'll be a full-time Member of Parliament, if elected. But he acknowledged that it'll be a tough fight, and added that he's prepared for it. Mr Ooi said even though he's not confident because of what had happened in his past attempts, he'll continue to come up with new ideas. "When you're an experienced politician, you're not scared of anything. You're a fighter. So you fight," he said. - CNA/ck ------------------------- Another one who wants a slice of everything.... |

Too many cooks spoil the soup. In the end the incumbent chef in white might win the battle.

SDP chairman collects 3 sets of nomination papers By Kimberly Spykerman | Posted: 10 January 2013 1339 hrs http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stori...247082/1/.html SINGAPORE: Chairman of the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) Mohamed Jufrie Mahmood collected three sets of nomination papers at the Elections Department on Thursday. But he remained tight-lipped about who the party plans to field as a candidate in the Punggol East by-election, set for 26 January. He told reporters that the SDP will reveal "very soon" who it has in mind. He added that he's hopeful that The Workers' Party (WP) will discuss ways to avoid any clash, if possible, in the single-seat ward. Mr Jufrie said the SDP has sent notes to WP, inviting it for discussions. He said the ball is in WP's court. When asked if he's optimistic about WP's response, Mr Jufrie replied: "I'm hopeful but I don't know. It's up to them." The SDP had signalled that it'll contest for the seat of Member of Parliament, left vacant after Mr Michael Palmer of the People's Action Party resigned over an extramarital affair. - CNA/ck |

I am happy that someone in SGP can make it, despite humble backgrounds. |
