Referee for Liverpool vs Manchester City confirmed as Michael Oliver - but where is Martin Atkinson?

Michael Oliver has been confirmed as the referee for Liverpool's blockbusting showdown with Manchester City on Sunday.

And it could be good news for Jurgen Klopp's side.

The European champions take on the Premier League champions at Anfield hoping to strengthen their grip at the top of the Premier League.

Liverpool currently stand six points clear of City having taken 31 points from a possible 33 in their opening 11 games, their best-ever start to a top-flight campaign.

The Reds have been involved in refereeing controversy in recent weeks, most notably involving Martin Atkinson.

Atkinson was the referee when Manchester United scored a controversial opener in the 1-1 draw against Liverpool last month, and was the VAR who determined it was correct to disallow a Roberto Firmino strike for offside in the Reds' 2-1 win at Aston Villa on Saturday.

Oliver is widely regarded as the best referee in the Premier League with this the third time he has taken charge of a meeting between Liverpool and City.

And one good omen for the Reds is that in the 18 previous Anfield games where Oliver has officiated, stretching back to 2008, they have yet to lose one.

Oliver will be assisted by Stuart Burt and Simon Bennett while the fourth official is Mike Dean. VAR will be Paul Tierney, with assistant VAR Constantine Hatzidakis.

There had been a rumour over the weekend that Atkinson would be appointed for Sunday's fixture.

Instead, the under-fire official will officiate the game between Newcastle United and Bournemouth on Saturday afternoon.

Liverpool complete dramatic seven year turnaround to finally top European rankings ahead of Man City

Liverpool have moved to top spot in the European Club Index for the first time since their records began in 2007.

The ECI values the biggest clubs across the continent based on their expected level of sporting success and derive their results from games across both domestic competitions, Champions League, Europa League and the Super Cup.

Liverpool finished their Premier League campaign with 97 points last term three weeks before winning the European Cup for a sixth time with a 2-0 win over Tottenham in Madrid's Wanda Metropolitano.

Jurgen Klopp's side then lifted the UEFA Super Cup in August after beating Chelsea on penalties at Vodafone Park in Istanbul, while their strong form domestically has seen them win 10 of their 11 games so far to rise to the top of the Premier League.

Since the ECI records began 12 years ago, the lowest the Reds have slipped to was 37th in December 2012 just a few months into Brendan Rodgers' reign as manager.

The weekly publishing sees Liverpool on an ECI index of 4257 with the Reds predicted to earn 92 Premier League points this term, based on their calculations.

"Based on the sporting results of three consecutive seasons, the relative playing strengths are calculated of all relevant teams within each country on the start date (i.e. July 1, 2007)," they say of their methodology.

"Also the relative strengths are calculated of the teams that have represented their country in the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League and UEFA Super Cup. The result is an ECI-value for all relevant teams on the start date."

Liverpool lead Sunday's opponents Manchester City by a slender 14 points with Barcelona in third on 4205.

Bayern Munich (3919) and Juventus (3817) complete the top five with Atletico Madrid, Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid and Arsenal making up the rest of the 10.

Default Premier League 'to consider radical VAR changes including manager appeals'

The Premier League are considering a number of radical VAR changes including giving managers the chance to appeal refereeing decisions.

There have been several incidents with the new technology this season which has affected both Liverpool and Everton.

Roberto Firmino had a goal ruled out for offside during the Reds match against Aston Villa on Saturday.

In a statement the Premier League said Firmino's armpit was marginally ahead of the last Aston Villa defender but several former professionals including Peter Crouch, Gary Lineker and Chris Kamara criticised the decision.

There was also controversy in Everton's game against Spurs with the Blues being denied a penalty when the ball struck Dele Ali's hand in the area.

The amount of time taken to make decisions has also been a problem with lengthy delays in several fixtures.

However, the system could be set for a makeover.

According to the Telegraph, Premier League clubs will meet next week with a "robust" discussion promised on the failings.

One of the radical changes could be the introductions of appeals for managers.

It is thought that the Premier League will strongly argue against the proposal.

No top-flight referee has checked pitchside monitors in games this season after advice in pre-season to use them sparingly.

In both the men's and women's 2018 and 2019 World Cup competitions referees were able to review footage of match incidents before changing their decision.

Klopp's warning

Jurgen Klopp has issued a warning ahead of Liverpool’s meeting with Genk this evening.

The German coach told the official matchday programme: “There is work for us to do tonight and we cannot and must not have our focus anywhere but here. We must be in the moment.

“We saw just how tight the group was last season. The very last kick of the very last group game could have put us out.

“If you for even half-a-second lose sight of how hard this competition is and how precious each and every point is, trust me, we will not have the experiences like we enjoyed the last couple of seasons.

“A Champions League game, be it group or knockout, is a heavyweight world-title fight every time. Every team you face has the quality to beat you and to knock you to the canvas. These teams don’t just have a puncher’s chance, they are winners with a winner’s approach.

“If you have the wrong attitude or the wrong mindset you will lose. There is no question of this.”

Mane on Klopp's secret and 'priceless' team-mate

Sadio Mane has given a behind-the-scenes glimpse into what it is like to be a player at Liverpool right now.

Speaking to France Football, (cited by the Mirror) the Ballon d’Or nominee revealed what the atmosphere is like inside the dressing room and his relationship with Jurgen Klopp.

The Senegal forward said: “His secret, I think, is to be the team’s dad. Between us, everything clicked straight away.

“We all love him like a father and we fear him like one too.

“He takes up a lot of space in my life, and not just in football. He’s great as a person. I trust him blindly, like most of the dressing room, I think.”

Mane also named Naby Keita as a team-mate who is ‘priceless’ to him.

He added: “He’s more than a friend for me, he’s a brother. It hasn’t been easy for him lately because he was injured for a long time, but I know he’ll come back at his best, because he’s working hard to do so.

“He just needs to improve his English to be understood more by everyone, but to be able to count on a true friend in the group, that’s priceless. It’s even calming at times.”
