What is subject banding?

They should install correct values in the students first. That is in a mess from elite top to very bottom ft.

As usual, gov very good with coining words to camouflage things.

Banding is just their new way of streaming. No diff.

Last time, in Pri school, they have Normal, Extended and Monolingo, and they rebrand it to EM1, EM2, EM3. The 3rd is almost as good as saying they are stupid, hopeless.

Normal and Express, doesnt condemn weaker students compared to Express, Normal Academic and Bormal Technical. Now this 'banding'....

Just say it's a new way of streaming, to CULL the weaker students so they dont pull down the acadamically smarter ones. No need to use some beautified words.

Streaming renamed as g1, g2 & g3 that’s all.
One national exam at sec 4.... psle upgraded.
I don’t really blame moe. All these from parents complaining for their strawberry kids.
No need to cotton wool things. If studies not as good as others, work harder.
So shameful to let others know your kids in normal stream?
Please la. My son went to NA cos he flunked Chinese in PSLE. Worked hard and went back to sec 2 express.

Nothing good will come out of this.

Only the strong characters will be unaffected.

Pity the rest, will get influenced and pulled down.

When you are streamed, homophily effects will help you if you're good.
Without streaming, the egalitarian mix hopefully helps pull up the weaker students.

But, poor attitudes and lepakness can be infectious to those not so driven in their purpose.

In case I am accused of being elitist, fyi I came from lousy primary and secondary schools and only in JC went to a good school.
If not for my "hunger", I could have ended up being a chicken rice hawker or drug dealer.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crab_mentality

Crab mentality, also known as crabs in a bucket (also barrel, basket, or pot) mentality, is a way of thinking best described by the phrase "if I can't have it, neither can you".[1] The metaphor refers to a pattern of behaviour noted in crabs when they are trapped in a bucket. While any one crab could easily escape,[2] its efforts will be undermined by others, ensuring the group's collective demise.[3][4][5]

The analogy in human behaviour is claimed to be that members of a group will attempt to reduce the self-confidence of any member who achieves success beyond the others, or halt their progress, out of envy, resentment, spite, conspiracy, or competitive feelings

Previously it was class streaming.
In other words, streaming based on total score of all subjects.
One joins a class with similar total score.

Now is subject streaming.
Base on subject score.
One joins a class for specific subjects with similar subject score.

So in a maths class say, all those with similar maths score will go to the same class.

Needs clever software to do all the timetabling.

Seems like a "refinement" of class streaming.

Wont be too different from class streaming, as total score will correlate strongly with subject score.

Except in cases where say one is strong in only one particular subject.
Say poor total score in class but strong in arts.
Then can join the strong arts class.

Or poor in total score but strong in a language ( maybe mother tongue )
then can join a strong language class be it Chinese or Tamil or French.

Seems like a better system.
Gives some a chance to excel in one subject.

I think more of moving to different classes for different subjects rather than class placements based on subjects.
