Filtration suggestion for Ranchu fiberglass tank
Hello
I am new here. I have a fiberglass tank 128cm X 78cm X 30.5cm. Currently, there are only some water lettuce and water lily plant. I would like to add a filter which I can purchase. Budget is not more than $500 or thereabouts. Given my limitation, the filters system should allow me to change water once a week or less often. Please advice. |

$500 is more than enough.
go Seaview or mainland and get a 4ft Fgt filter box. should be around $195 (Seaview pricing). choose one that matches the color of your Fgt. bring the filter box to the hardware store and buy the PVC piping of the same diameter (Buy more length incase of miscalculation). Should cost less than $10. The rest of the remaining $$ go get a good pump and media. |

Type of filter and capacity would depend on how many fish (and size) you intend to keep in your 4 feet tank. Also, take into consideration the amount you feed and feeding frequency are important factors as well. Given your setup, I'd not keep more than 6. As far as filter goes, there are many options given your budget. Generally, for GF, trickle filtration is best and is recommended by many. If your tank is built to support overhead filter, then a 4 ft OHF might work on a relatively low cost, below $100.

Haha, I didn't know FGT is actually a "tub".
In that case, you need a filter box. Got a pic of your FGT? I have seen some with built in filter box atop. |

No idea whether it can support an over head filtration system. The fibre glass tank was bought more than 15 years ago. Will go down to seletar tomorrow to check out your suggestion.

Thank you all for the suggestion. I have went down to sea view to check their filter box but no black color to match my tub, end up with an external canister from eheim 3e 450.

Eheim makes great canister filters. In fact, I have two.
However, I find them more suitable for small tropical fish, not so for goldfish. Goldfish creates too high of a bioload for an enclosed canister to handle. You may find yourself having to service the canister at least once a month. And cleaning the canister thoroughly can be quite troublesome. Let us know how it is working for you. |
