No metallic components, the term to use will be"Aging". basically PE is non bio-degradable. So it will take a long time before "aging" kicks in.. basically that's wat u see for most plastic material where by after long period of time, it will start to have jagged edges... Something similar to the effect of rust

Hi sis, It can also work as a Stagnant media as well which can be placed at the overflow area of the tank. But unlike Bioballs which no matter how long you use, it will still float. For Mutag Biochip, Once the biofilm develops, it gets heavier and starts to sink.
So without aeration to push them upwards, it will become a stagnant media, just like any other stagnant media. Basically, the self cleaning function will not be utilized unless your current is that strong to help to push up the media
