koi pond reconstruction

recently noticed that the walls of the pond keep peeling off and i was quite concerned that my kois would eat those peeled off coating as algae was growing on them too.
so i decided to take this opportunity to redo up the pond, filter and adding a chiller

here are some pictures of the "holes" in the wall

before any work can be started, all my kois had to be rehouse for the next 2-3 months

the first day of work was of course to remove the old layer of coating

at the end of the first day, almost half of the pond was removed

the pond older layer was completely removed and grinded to prepare for the fiberglass

at the same time, work had began on the filter chamber

Fine fish bro.

What chiller are you planning on using? An Artica?
I'm hoping to get away with a tap-powered misting system, some waterproof DC fans and adequate shade.

Them chillers eat a bit too much power.

Wow very big project. Mind educating me why need a chiller? I thought If a pond is deep or holds enough water volume should be ok? Thanks!!

hi, can i ask what fish you keep with your koi to clean up algae on the wall?

i can use normal plecos cos they are too small. always enter my filters.

I never had a serious algae issue in my 100% koi pond. The walls were green, but not excessively so. But perhaps that is because I kept my koi a little hungry as my filter system was a bit undersized. Not so much waste in the water + hungry koi always nibbling on the walls kept serious growth in check.

I have heard good things about Siamese Algae Eaters. They are small (relative to koi) fast moving fish growing to about 5in. They will eat the string algae that even plecos will not eat.

Btw "normal" plecos get quite large. If you are having trouble with the small ones, you could look for someone trying to rehome a large pleco. The big ones at 12+ inches full grown wouldn't be comfortable in the average home aquarium. You'll need to feed large ones sinking pellets to supplement the algae or they might start sucking on koi slime.
