Gerrard's First Game

Steven Gerrard will take charge of his first competitive game as a senior manager this evening as Rangers take on Macedonian outfit Shkupi in the Europa League qualifiers.

“I’m not nervous or scared,” Gerrard said in his pre-match press conference yesterday. “I can’t wait to walk out there and get the game going and the lads are really ready for it.

“We want the crowd to get right behind the team for the full 90 minutes and really get after that. We are at home. We have spoken about what we want to make Ibrox this year, we have spoken about standards and consistency so I expect the team to come out firing in the early stages.

“We are not good enough at the moment to take our foot off the gas or be complacent or be enjoying ourselves. We have got tons of work to do, tons of improvement, before we can be relaxed and pick and choose when we turn up.”

Gerrard lifted the then-named UEFA Cup with Liverpool back in 2001 - with Ibrox assistant Gary McAllister also netting for the Reds - and the manager believes the competition has it’s ‘mojo back’ with the added enticement of Champions League football for the winners.

“I have fantastic memories of winning it as a 20-year-old kid and I managed to get on the scoresheet in the Final, which capped off a great year winning the treble.

“Lifting the trophy is a fantastic experience, it’s a huge trophy – and very heavy – so I’ll never play it down but I won’t argue that you can compare it to the Champions League, it’s a different animal.

“The competition now has got its spark, its buzz and its mojo back certainly with the winners getting access to the Champions League.”

Origi Wanted

Fenerbahce want to take Divock Origi on loan, Turkish Football claim.

Former Liverpool managing director Damien Comolli - who now operates in the same role for the Super Lig giants - has held talks with the forward which were bizarrely orchestrated by Fenerbahce basketball coach Zeljko Obradovic.

Obradovic’s agent, the report claims, is partners with Origi’s agent and introduced the Belgian to Comolli.

Fotomac believe Origi is open to the possibility of the move but Jurgen Klopp recently said he is yet to decide on the 23-year-old’s future.

Gerrard's Hendo Message

Steven Gerrard has revealed he contacted Jordan Henderson after England’s World Cup semi-final defeat to Croatia last night.

The former Liverpool midfielder - who is now in charge of Rangers - has been impressed with Henderson after his performances in Russia drew praise from the wider footballing community.

“I’ve been one of his defenders over the last couple of years when he’s had his critics about because I know the player and I know the person,” Gerrard told BBC Radio 5 Live.

“I spoke to him last night after the game and I said to him: ‘Look. I know you’ll be hurting right now but you should come back into the country with your head held high.’

“His time will come. He’s getting so, so close to one of these trophies and a big success in his career, and it will be making of him and people will realise the player and the leader he is.

“He has absolutely emptied the tank for both England and Liverpool this year.

“He ran out of steam a little bit in extra-time, but he’s absolutely given everything for club and country and I think he’s had a fantastic season.

“People are starting to appreciate him now, whereas I’ve appreciated him all along.”

Default Klopp provides LFC squad update for Bury trip

Jürgen Klopp expects to welcome Joel Matip and Virgil van Dijk into his available squad for Saturday's pre-season friendly with Bury.

Georginio Wijnaldum, who returned to training on Sunday, must be assessed before the game after missing Thursday morning’s session.

“It’s pre-season so I don’t know exactly who will be ready for Saturday, to be honest,” the manager told Liverpoolfc.com once the workout, the first of two on the day, was complete.

“I hope Joel [can play], it looks like that. Virgil can play. Gini was not in training this morning; that’s pre-season, sometimes they feel a little bit here or a little bit there and the medical department tell me: ‘not today’. I don’t know if he will be in tomorrow, we will know that a little bit later.”

The trip to Bury marks the Reds’ third outing of the summer after 7-0 and 3-2 victories at Chester FC and Tranmere Rovers respectively since they came back to Melwood on July 2.

Klopp confirmed he is likely to name different teams for each half of the clash with the League Two side, as he did in the previous two matches.

The boss anticipates a good test for Liverpool as they continue to lay the groundwork needed to improve on the level they showed last term.

“It’s still early stages. A lot of teams started only yesterday and we are already eight or nine days in,” he continued.

“We want to use that time, we don’t want to make early tests in the games and say: ‘that’s not enough’. We only want to play as often as possible and work with the results and the performances. As long as it’s fair and they cause us problems, it’s good for us.

“I don’t think Tranmere caused us too many problems, we caused our problems ourselves but that’s part of football as well. It was a nice atmosphere, the pitch was really good. I liked the game.

“Now let’s do the next step. It’s much more important in the pre-season what we do in the sessions. In the games sometimes you see a little bit of it, sometimes not. You need to play football with instinct and we create this kind of instinct again.

“A lot of players will come back now in the next eight or nine days and then we have the next group and we are in America, they’ll then start training and all that stuff. It’s kind of a challenge but it’s the same for all the other teams as well.

“The plan is to be stronger after pre-season than before pre-season, reach the level from last year again and use that as a basis for the next step.”

Default Salah, Mane and Grujic confirmed for USA tour

Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Marko Grujic will travel with Liverpool for the club's pre-season tour of the USA, which begins next Saturday.

The trio were on World Cup duty with Egypt, Senegal and Serbia respectively and with each having been eliminated at the group stage in Russia are set to return to the Reds in time for the week-long trip to America.

Jürgen Klopp’s team will compete in the International Champions Cup with fixtures against Borussia Dortmund in Charlotte, Manchester City in East Rutherford, and Manchester United in Ann Arbor.

“That’s the start for them,” the manager confirmed to Liverpoolfc.com when asked whether Salah, Mane and Grujic are going to be part of his squad in America.

“They had their holiday and then they’ll come with us to the USA. They only had three weeks’ holiday so it means they didn’t lose too much.

“We have to see how they present and then we’ll see if they can play in the games. They will be there. And then the last group [of World Cup players] comes much later.”

Liverpool close in on Xherdan Shaqiri transfer as £13.5m Stoke winger gets set for medical

Xherdan Shaqiri is set to undergo a medical ahead of completing his £13.5million transfer to Liverpool.

The Reds have a deal in place with Stoke City after triggering his release clause and barring any late hitches the Swiss winger will become Jurgen Klopp's third signing of the summer.

Shaqiri has had offers from across Europe following Stoke's relegation to the Championship but once Liverpool firmed up their interest his heart was set on moving to Anfield.

The 26-year-old, whose involvement in the World Cup was ended at the last 16 stage by Sweden last week, is likely to make his Reds debut during the pre-season tour of America later this month.

Jurgen Klopp believes securing the services of such an experienced attacker will help add real depth to the squad.

Liverpool have been looking to increase their cover in wide areas for Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane. Dead ball specialist Shaqiri fits the bill at a bargain price.

The Reds boss has long since admired Shaqiri having come up against him in the Bundesliga.

He won back-to-back league and German Cup doubles with Bayern Munich and was part of their squad which beat Klopp's Borussia Dortmund in the 2013 Champions League final.

Since joining Stoke in 2015, Shaqiri has scored 15 Premier League goals in 84 appearances.

Default Klopp reveals Roberto Firmino's LFC return date

Roberto Firmino will begin his pre-season with Liverpool when Jürgen Klopp takes the squad to France for a training camp at the end of the month.

The forward represented Brazil during their run to the World Cup quarter-finals and is now on a break before returning to club duty ahead of the new campaign.

Firmino is set to re-join the Reds for the four-day stay in France, which comes shortly after their tour of the USA and participation in the International Champions Cup.

“Bobby will be in for the second camp,” Klopp told Liverpoolfc.com.

“Then we have the English guys, Simon [Mignolet] and Dejan [Lovren] will come another week later – we’ll already be back from France and will have exactly one week to prepare the game [against West Ham United]. That’s no problem.”

Xherdan Shaqiri Liverpool medical underway as Reds transfer target agrees personal terms

Xherdan Shaqiri's medical is underway ahead of completing his £13million move to Liverpool.

The ECHO understands that the Swiss winger flew into Merseyside on Thursday night with personal terms already agreed.

Shaqiri's medical tests started before 9am on Friday and if everything goes to plan there should be an official announcement in the next 24 hours.

He would become Jurgen Klopp's third summer signing following the arrival of Naby Keita and Fabinho.

Liverpool have refused to comment on whether the deal is done but sources have told the ECHO that his release clause following Stoke City's relegation from the Premier League has been triggered.

Reports have varied about the fee involved but the ECHO understands that the figure is £13million.

That represents fine business for Liverpool considering Shaqiri's ability and experience. He will provide quality cover across Klopp's frontline.

The 26-year-old, whose involvement in the World Cup was ended at the last 16 stage by Sweden last week, is likely to make his Reds debut during the pre-season tour of America later this month.

Klopp has long since admired Shaqiri having come up against him in the Bundesliga. He won back-to-back league and German Cup doubles with Bayern Munich and was part of their squad which beat Klopp's Borussia Dortmund in the 2013 Champions League final.
