Default Team news: Confirmed Liverpool team v Bury

Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip will both receive their first pre-season outing today after being named in Liverpool's starting XI to face Bury.

Van Dijk returned to training on Sunday following a slightly extended summer break due to international commitments and, as such, was not deemed ready for the midweek meeting with Tranmere Rovers.

Matip, meanwhile, also missed that fixture and the preceding clash with Chester as he completed his rehabilitation from the thigh injury that cut his 2017-18 campaign short.

However, having now proven their fitness, the central defensive duo have been named in Jürgen Klopp's team for today's friendly at the Energy Check Stadium.

Behind them, Loris Karius starts in goal, with the German likely to feature for the entire 90 minutes of today's game, rather than being subject to a half-time withdrawal.

That decision has allowed Danny Ward to remain at Melwood in order to take part in a full training session - the Welshman is in line to play at Blackburn Rovers on Thursday.

Danny Ings will also take part in training as he recovers from severe blisters, while Georginio Wijnaldum misses out as a precaution due to a minor muscle issue.

Liverpool: Karius, Clyne, Van Dijk, Matip, Moreno, Milner, Fabinho, Jones, Ojo, Origi, Sturridge.

Subs: Grabara, Keita, Gomez, Klavan, Lallana, Robertson, Solanke, Kent, Phillips, Woodburn, Camacho, Chirivella.

Wilson set for loan move

And here’s that story on Harry Wilson’s future in full.

James Pearce writes:

Harry Wilson looks set to go on a season-long loan after being left out of the Liverpool squad to face Bury.

The 21-year-old winger, who signed a new five-year contract this week, didn’t travel with Jurgen Klopp’s squad to Gigg Lane on Saturday.

Wilson impressed in Liverpool’s opening two friendlies against Chester and Tranmere, and is rated highly by Klopp.

However, the Reds boss believes another stint in the Championship would be better for the Wales international’s development than staying around on the fringes of the first-team squad this season.

More than a dozen clubs have tried to secure Wilson’s signature with Stoke City, Swansea City and Derby County the current front-runners.”

Shaqiri to join Reds next week

Jurgen Klopp has revealed that new signing Xherdan Shaqiri will make his debut for the Reds on their tour of the United States.

Shaqiri cut short his holiday to fly into Merseyside and sign for the Reds on Friday, but will be allowed time to resume his break after the World Cup.

Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Marko Grujic will all join up with their team-mates before the trip next week - and Shaqiri will too.

Klopp confirmed:

"The strange thing is in the summer break is that I always have to tell the players they need to have more holidays because they constantly want to be in immediately, but they cannot do it.

“It’s not allowed they have two weeks off and then they start the English Premier League season, which is really long and demanding.

“Xherdan was in yesterday, which was nice. He is a nice fella. He will be back in the USA. Hopefully he will now take a holiday there because it will be pretty easy to join us there.”

Default Lyon chairman opens door for Liverpool to revive Nabil Fekir transfer

Lyon chairman Jean-Michel Aulas is open to Liverpool renewing their efforts to sign Nabil Fekir.

Fekir was on the brink of moving to Anfield last month before the Reds pulled the plug on the deal following the results of his medical.

Liverpool had agreed a deal worth an initial 55million euros plus 5m euros in add-ons and had even recorded an interview with the club website ahead of his unveiling.

Following the failed deal, Fekir linked up with the France side ahead of the World Cup and is expected to be on the bench for the final on Sunday afternoon against Croatia.

Jurgen Klopp is still keen on signing an attacking midfielder having already signed Fabinho, Naby Keita and Xherdan Shaqiri this summer.

And Lyon chairman Aulas believes there's a chance Fekir will still end up at Anfield before the transfer window closes next month.

"It seems to me that Liverpool could come back in," he said in an interview with le10sport. "That's what I've read in the press, but I've not been told anything.

"His transfer failed in June, but he hasn't been affected by it. He is focused on the World Cup, and he still has his heart in Lyon.

"Nabil is much closer to Lyon today than he was when we talked to Liverpool.

"Maybe he will go to Liverpool, or another club, but if he stays at Lyon, it will be a great year for him and for us."

Fekir has in recent weeks been linked with interest from a number of clubs including Real Madrid and Manchester United, but it's believed he has set his heart on a move to Liverpool.

Default Why Curtis Jones is on the same Liverpool path as Trent Alexander-Arnold

Jurgen Klopp has saluted the progress of Liverpool youngster Curtis Jones - but has no intention of becoming carried away by the midfielder.

Jones was one of few positives of an underwhelming goalless draw at Bury on Saturday.

The 17-year-old caught the eye during the opening 45 minutes having previously featured against both Chester City and Tranmere Rovers in the previous week.

And Klopp has pointed to the impact made by other Academy graduates during his reign.

"Curtis is like the others, like Ben Woodburn the year before or Trent Alexander-Arnold," he said. "It’s good for us but it’s not about showing up once or twice, it’s about making the right decisions.

"Physically he’s a little bit ahead of the others because he’s obviously taller, and there’s a lot of body he can swap into muscle. It’s good for the moment.

“All these boys are good footballers, but you can see it’s difficult. One year older and everybody thinks you need to make the next step already, then a new boy comes and we are happy we have another one.

"It’s a long way, but we are calm enough."

Default Klopp sets World Cup quartet's LFC return date

Jordan Henderson, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Dejan Lovren and Simon Mignolet are scheduled to report for Liverpool duty on August 5.

The quartet were the Reds’ last participants at the World Cup, with Lovren playing in Croatia's defeat in Sunday’s final after Henderson and Alexander-Arnold’s England had lost to Mignolet’s Belgium in the third-place play-off on Saturday.

All four will now take a near-three-week break and are set to return to their club seven days before Liverpool host West Ham United in their opening game of the 2018-19 Premier League campaign.

Klopp said: “They are back as well at August 5, I think, then we have proper week to prepare the season.”

The boss has already confirmed that new signing Xherdan Shaqiri will be involved in the Reds' tour of the USA, with Roberto Firmino to report at the subsequent pre-season training camp in France.

Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Marko Grujic, meanwhile, will travel with Liverpool to America.

Default Jurgen Klopp offers update on Daniel Sturridge's Liverpool future

Jurgen Klopp has reaffirmed Daniel Sturridge has a future at Liverpool – as the Reds striker beings to claw his way back up the pecking order.

Sturridge's Anfield career has appeared in doubt since he was allowed to leave on loan to West Bromwich Albion for the second half of last term.

The 28-year-old returned to Melwood for pre-season and, with the first-choice forward line of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane unavailable, has been given a chance to impress.

Sturridge has demonstrated more than either Divock Origi or Dominic Solanke in recent friendlies, while Danny Ings has missed the last two games due to blisters and will in any case be allowed to leave should he seek pastures new.

And when asked about Sturridge following the goalless draw at Bury on Saturday, Klopp said: “It’s funny, this is my third pre-season and every year we talk about the same things! It’s no problem.

“I always said there is a future, it’s about what we do in the moment. At the moment it’s all good and we don’t have to make decisions.

“I don’t think about my players like this – like, maybe he’s in or out. With the young ones we make these decisions but not with the other guys. They show up, and it should be easy for me in the end.

“The window is still open, right? Is it closing tomorrow? No? Good!”
