Default Liverpool must replicate Virgil van Dijk deal to sign Alisson-but time is running out

Liverpool have been urged to sign Roma goalkeeper Alisson at all costs - just like they did for Virgil van Dijk.

And time might be of the essence with the 25-year-old set to star for Brazil in this month's World Cup.

The Brazilian stopper is on the Reds' wishlist as they look to strengthen their goalkeeping options.

The club heavily scouted the Brazilian international in recent months, but had initially backed away from a deal after being put off by Roma's price tag.

Reports have indicated that Liverpool could come back to the table for Alisson after Loris Karius' horror display in the Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid, but Monchi says that the Serie A club have received no bids yet.

But former defender Steve Nicol believes Liverpool must do all they can to bring the South American to Anfield, similar to their pursuit of Van Dijk, when they would eventually part with £75million.

Speaking on ESPN, the Scot said: "We sat here and mulled over the price tag for Van Dijk - did Van Dijk make a difference? My goodness did he make a difference. This team was transformed with Van Dijk in it.

“So imagine what would happen if they got Alisson. If you want to go for the big prizes you need to have good players and good players cost money.

“But you know what? Liverpool have the money. If you’ve got it, you spend it tomorrow, or in 10 minutes’ time, if you’ve got the opportunity.

“Do you buy two average players or one great player? You buy the great player.”

Alisson will be his country's no.1 in Russia this summer, with his performances already reportedly alerting the likes of Chelsea and Real Madrid to his ability too.

And Nicol's ESPN colleague, former Venezuela international Alejandro Moreno, thinks Liverpool must act quickly to avoid a bidding war after the World Cup.

"If you’re sure that Alisson is your guy and Liverpool are sure this is the guy you want to go after, you better go after him quickly," Moreno said.

“If this guy has a good World Cup with Brazil then maybe others come into play and say, ‘You know what, we want a piece of that too’ and that only raises the price.

“If you’re sure that this is your guy, commit to it and make a decision prior to the World Cup.”

Norwich Eye Ward

On the subject of goalkeepers - and ones rumoured to be arriving at Anfield - current Red Danny Ward is a rumoured target for Championship side Norwich.

The Canaries had Manchester City’s Angus Gunn on loan last season, but with the 22-year-old returning to his parent club, they have now apparently turned their attentions to Ward.

Norwich sporting director Stuart Webber was the man who brought Ward to Huddersfield during his time with the Terriers, with Ward helping them to the Premier League via the play-offs in 2017.

He made just one appearance for the Reds last season and could be keen to taste first-team action once more. His contract with Liverpool runs until 2021, however, so a loan move would be the most likely option for Daniel ****e’s men.

Default Grujic named in Serbia's final World Cup squad

Liverpool midfielder Marko Grujic has been named in Serbia's final squad for this summer's World Cup.

After initially making Mladen Krstajic's larger provisional squad, Grujic has been selected in a slimmed down 23-man group to head out to Russia later this month.

The 22-year-old spent the latter half of the 2017-18 campaign on loan at Cardiff City, impressing as the Welsh side gained automatic promotion to the Premier League.

He will now get the chance to show his talents on the biggest stage this summer as Serbia look to emerge from a group featuring Brazil, Switzerland and Costa Rica.

Default Ousmane Dembele, Jan Oblak, Bernard and other Liverpool transfer rumours rated

May, the month of football, is over. June, the month of transfers, is here.

As the world gets set for a little well-known tournament over in Russia in less than two weeks, club football fans continue to cast eyes towards the transfer window, and seeing what awaits them.

There is plenty of speculation. Here is the latest round-up of transfer gossip surrounding Liverpool - with our writer's take on whether they will fit in at Anfield.

Thibaut Courtois

Who? Chelsea goalkeeper with just a year remaining on his Stamford Bridge contract.

Where? Initially reports in Italy - most notably Gianluca Di Marzio - although the Mirror now suggest Liverpool would be interested if given the opportunity.

Kristian says: Most clubs in the world would be interested in Courtois, especially given his current contract situation. Liverpool are searching for a goalkeeper but Courtois seems set for a move to Madrid, either Real or Atletico, if he moves at all.

Jan Oblak

Who? Atletico Madrid's main man between the sticks, largely considered one of the best goalkeepers in the world.

Where? The Mirror once more. As part of their Courtois speculation, they suggest the Belgian could go to Atletico - leaving the door open for Liverpool to bid for Oblak.

Kristian says: There is no doubt Liverpool want a goalkeeper, and his name should be in any conversation. But, for now, Alisson of Roma remains of real interest.

Ousmane Dembele

Who? Barcelona's exciting young forward, whom they signed from Borussia Dortmund last summer.

Where? Over in Spain, and Mundo Deportivo to be precise. They claim Jurgen Klopp has contacted the Frenchman himself to detail his desire of signing him, and will happily accept a year-long loan deal rather than a permanent transfer.

Kristian says: Klopp laughed off the links with Dembele last month, and loan deals are not something Klopp - or Liverpool - often partakes in. Mundo Deportivo's strike-rate isn't the greatest, either.

Bernard

Who? Shakhtar Donetsk's Brazilian attacking midfielder, who is available on a free this summer.

Where? Italian journalist Andersinho Marques, who works for television channel PremiumSportHD. He claims Arsenal and clubs from the Chinese Super League are also interested.

Kristian says: He is the stand-out name on the list of summer Bosmans - Emre Can aside, of course - and would offer an option across the front three.

Liverpool step up search for new goalkeeper - with Jan Oblak backed by fans as first choice

Liverpool will continue to step up their search for a new goalkeeper - in a move which is heavily backed by supporters.

Loris Karius' nightmare Champions League final intensified the spotlight on the position, with the club already in the process of identifying somebody capable of challenging Karius for the no.1 shirt.

Liverpool earlier this year informed the representatives of Roma goalkeeper Alisson not to expect a bid this summer - although that could change over the coming weeks with Jurgen Klopp considering his options as he looked to overhaul the goalkeeping department.

Jan Oblak is another named linked, with Simon Mignolet expected to depart after five years at Anfield.

And in a survey conducted by the ECHO, Liverpool fans have revealed their desire to see a change between the sticks.

Over 1,000 votes were cast as we asked for your views on the 2017/18 season and the summer to come.

When asked which position needs strengthening most this summer, 78.1% responded goalkeeper, with 13.8% believe midfield was the priority.

Somewhat surprisingly perhaps, given how it has been a perceived problem at Anfield, only 4.1% believe the defence needs the most attention, with 3.9% claiming the attack.

If the Reds do go into the market for a goalkeeper, then Oblak would be first-choice amongst those who voted in our survey.

In response to which player linked with a move to Liverpool you would like to see at Anfield, the Atletico Madrid man scored 37.5%.

Nabil Fekir, who Liverpool are keen on signing, came third with 25.7%, while Alisson was third with 24.5%.

And that desire to see the goalkeeping department reshaped is highlighted even more when both Karius and Mignolet form two of the top six players the voters want to see the club consider letting go this summer.

Daniel Sturridge leads with 89.7% of voters wanting him to possibly leave, with Mignolet close behind on 88.5%.

There is support for Karius in general, with Divock Origi, Alberto Moreno and Danny Ings all higher in the voting.

The German, however, is sixth with 45.3% believing the Reds should consider his departure.

Default From three to 2.57m - Liverpool's season in numbers

After 56 games, 135 goals, the most prolific debut season in club history, an eighth European Cup final – and much more – the 2017-18 campaign is now consigned to the record books.

So, with a helping hand from official LFC statistician Ged Rea, here are the best facts and figures from the past nine months…

3 - hat-tricks were scored by Liverpool players during the season: Philippe Coutinho (against Spartak Moscow), Sadio Mane (at FC Porto) and Mohamed Salah, who scored four against Watford.

5 - the number of goals scored by substitutes - two each from Salah and Daniel Sturridge, and the other from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

5 - Reds players made their first appearance for the club: Oxlade-Chamberlain, Andy Robertson, Salah, Dominic Solanke and Virgil van Dijk.

8 - Liverpool reached an eighth European Cup final. Only four teams have played in more.

9 - defeats this season in all competitions. That represents the best in a campaign which included European competition since 2008-09.

11 - the most goals ever scored by a Liverpool player in a European season, achieved by two players: Roberto Firmino and Salah.

13 - the player who received the most yellow cards in all competitions was Emre Can.

14 - the number of times the Reds scored four or more goals in a game, a tally only exceeded once in the club's history (1895-96).

18 - Liverpool's longest unbeaten run of games, stretching from October to January.

18 - different scorers in league and cup. Only once have more ever scored in a single campaign (22 in 2015-16).

24 - the number of league games in which Salah found the net, to set a new club record.

24 - years and 186 days: the average age of the youngest starting XI selected by Jürgen Klopp in the season, for a League Cup tie at Leicester City.

30 - Firmino was substituted most times, five more than Mane and Salah.

32 - Salah broke the record for most goals scored by any player in a 38-game Premier League season.

33 - players were named in a matchday squad by Klopp, with only Rafa Camacho, Curtis Jones, Lazar Markovic and Conor Masterson failing to appear.

34 - Salah found the net in 34 different games in league and cup - equalling the most ever in the history of English football, set previously by Luton's Joe Payne (1936-37) and Clive Allen of Tottenham Hotspur in 1986-87.

37 - the Reds scored a goal on average every 37 minutes.

38 - goals conceded in the league this season, the Reds’ lowest tally since 2009-10.

42 - Liverpool led at some point in 42 of their 56 fixtures.

43 - Solanke was named as a substitute most times, coming off the bench on 21 occasions.

44 - goals scored by Salah, the most ever by a Reds player in a debut season and second only to Ian Rush's 47 (1983-84) in any campaign.

45 - the number of games it took the Egyptian to net his first 40 goals for Liverpool, to set a new club record.

46 - occasions when the Reds were shown live on TV in the UK.

47 - goals were scored by Liverpool in Europe this season, the most by any team in a European Cup/Champions League campaign.

50 - per cent of the penalties awarded to Liverpool were scored (four out of eight).

54 - Firmino made more appearances for the club than any other player, missing only two games - away to Leicester in the League Cup and against Chelsea at Anfield when he was an unused substitute.

72 - yellow cards were issued to Liverpool in total.

85 - Salah spent a greater percentage of the league season on the pitch than any other Reds player.

88 - seconds into a game saw Liverpool register their quickest goal in 2017-18: Firmino at Sevilla in November.

91 - goals scored in total by Salah (44), Firmino (27) and Mane (20), one fewer than the whole team scored in the previous season.

135 - goals were scored by the Reds - the second-highest tally in the club's history and only three short of the record set in 1985-86.

4,187 - Firmino spent more minutes on the pitch than any other Liverpool player.

53,287 - the Reds' highest home league attendance, set in two fixtures, against Watford and Newcastle United.

2,573,888 - watched the Reds home and away in this 56-game campaign.

Default Anderson Talisca, Nabil Fekir's bidding war and more Liverpool transfer rumours rated

Nabil Fekir

Who? You know by now. The Lyon playmaker who Liverpool are hoping to bring to Anfield this summer.

Where? This comes, seemingly, from the Express. They claim the French club's president, Jean-Michel Aulas, will look to stall the deal for as long as possible in order to raise any potential price on the back of a strong World Cup showing.

Kristian says: Liverpool want Fekir and will hope to tie up a deal as soon as possible, but Aulas is a notoriously difficult negotiator.

Anderson Talisca

Who? An attacking midfielder from Benfica, perpetually linked with a move to Anfield. He is currently on loan at Besiktas, and scored 20 goals in 47 appearances.

Where? Over in Portugal, and Record to be precise. They claim the Turkish side have not opted to make their loan deal permanent, and that has alerted Jurgen Klopp to the possibility of signing him.

Kristian says: Talisca seems to be linked every transfer window, and the 24-year-old could fulfil the role of versatile back-up, in theory. But if Besiktas don't want him...

Thomas Lemar

Who? The Monaco playmaker who had previously been on Liverpool's radar.

Where? Tuttomercatoweb in Italy, although it is likely just from L'Equipe earlier in the week. They claim the Reds are still keen on the player and will bid around £100million for him.

Kristian says: Liverpool dropped their interest in Lemar this year, after trying to sign him in August. £100million would be a ludicrous fee for a player not guaranteed a starting place.

Besiktas Want Sturridge

Turkish newspaper Fotomac - via Sport Witness - reckon Daniel Sturridge could join Besiktas this summer.

Sturridge has reportedly had two meetings with vice-president Ahmet Nur Cebi in the hope of securing a move away from Anfield, with Besiktas fans planning a possible “Come to Besiktas” campaign which lured both Pepe and Alvaro Negredo to the club in recent times.

Hasan Eken, who Fotomac claim is a representative for Sturridge’s management agency, also spoke to the Turkish newspaper and said: “If certain terms are met and the great Besiktas fans want him to play for the club, then everything is possible.”

The Turkish club ironically see Sturridge as a replacement for Cenk Tosun, who joined Everton in January.
