Either way,an external thermostat measure your tank temperature on line whilst the internal thermostat measure the water pump into the chiller reservoir by your pump.
Because of this the internal thermostat cut in and out very often.

mine is a small 2.5 footer tank , total water volume inclusive of sump adds to est 124litres, 1/4HP hailea takes 15- 20 min to cool from 28 degrees to 25 degrees.

My take 1 hr 15min to chill from 27deg to 26deg with 2x250w MH running and it will kick in again about 1hr 45 min later.

Monster tank

From my assumption, I think the larger the tank volume with or without sump, the longer it will take the chiller to cool down the volume of water.
It also means that the chiller does not really kick in so fast, normally longer than the time needed to chill the water.

Correct assumption?

The price for a external thermostat is very expensive at $200..

any cheaper one??

you can get one for less than $80.
Check barra contact, I think it is less than $60 ..
