Default aeration and fish immunity

I find that is i do not on the air pump for my tank that still has a cannister filter running, my adult cichlid will have pimple like infections. With air pump on, those pimple infection sort of flatten and become red marks only.

Why is it so?

aeration increased the dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration.

A high DO concentration helps to drive nitrification to remove ammonium and also other biological process to convert other pollutants into CO2.

high DO, low NH4, low pollutants, better fish health.
