Default Maggots in Sump filter

I'm at the brink of throwing in the towel.

For some unknown reason, my current place is like some Drain Flies heaven.

In case you have no idea what Drain/moth Flies are -

Basically the cotton filter is totally clogged wif the squirming yucky mess and giving me nightmares.

Yest had some free time, so took some time to remove the cotton and soaked it in a pail of untreated tap water (DIE ALREADY!!) to my absolute horror, MORE of these squirming black mess suddenly started emerging from within the cotton - Think hundreds of eels suddenly emerging from their holes.

Obviously these buggers need to breathe in air, coz they started congregating at the surface or areas where they can get air.

And me being me, spread some DE ard the exposed cotton to see if it might help kill them (And the snails!!!!), leave the pail covered in cling foil to see how many actually become full fledged adults over a period of 1 night.

These buggers are quite furious, they pulled adults who are at the surface into the water, they eat each other, they eat snails out and within the short span of 1 night, I counted close to 20 adults

Help.. I need help..... I'm livin in constant fear and even went to the extent of gettin rubber gloves JUST to do my tank maintenance.

The weirder thing is, I've NEVER had this issue wif fish keepin till now.

Any suggestions, please?

A sign of over-feeding. Happened to my PNT tank at one time too.

Reduce feeding and change wool more regularly should alleviate the problem.

Personally, I dun think is overfeeding.

Is more like it's a suitable breeding ground.

They dun even need to feed on any of the fish leftover food (if any) - They can actually EAT the ever growing SNAILS population and each other!!!!
Even those in pupae stage not let off

I'm now considering if it'll b easy to DIY some sort of lid to prevent ANY flies/mozzies comin in aft i rid them..

I found my sump much cleaner after throwing in a bag of feeder ghost shrimps. They will eat anything.

All maggots are in the 1st compartment

|Water Pump||Media||Media||CC||1st Compartment|

Basically the compartment/return flow layout goes this way

| Outlet
| Space
| Hard Filter Wool }Worms & Snails
| Normal White Filter Wool }Worms & Snails
| Normal White Filter Wool<--- water lvl usually up till here }Worms & Snails
| Acrylic Board holding wool up
| Water tat flows into the nxt compartment
