Hello! Noob qns!
Dear all
I'm new here! Have been doing research on aros and I intend to get 1 when my new place is ready. Afew qns For a budget of 300 to 400 (looking XB Gold), is it worth visiting farms? Or to get from LFS? Don't intend to get a super ex specimen as it is my first time keeping one. Been to afew shops to see, some aros have pretty torn fins, will you go ahead to purchase them? (say the rest of the fish criteria is alright) Some LFS place their aros so high up, cant see clearly for flaws, anyone encountered? Cheers! |

Torn fins are normally placed in a comm. They will recover in due course. If I were you I will be looking for body shape, defects like gill curl, droop eyes, drop tail, protruding lower jaws, cramp fins (fins should be wide open when fish is stationary.
Your best bet will be getting a person whom is experienced with arowana to accompany you during selection. Remember see fish not see cert, some hi back or even rtg can be more stunning than a cross back |

Since you already visited LFS. Think you would roughly have an idea. Sometimes fish farm do have promotion and selling the aro at redlly cheap price. Maybe you can monitor the market 1st and at the mean time visit the aro farms.

Your budget already can get above average quality mid size xb in various buy/sell forum......
I bought 4 young adult xb from Simon (nomis), all turn out to be pretty good fishes in tank environment if you put in effort keeping them.... I feed them alot everyday |

For arowana retailers, u can go through the list of afc associate members. A few of them carry asian arowanas. Some of the farms do retail too, u can call them up to check.
For fins damage, take note that the fins of soft bones are not broken. If so, that may be a bit more tricky to heal perfectly.
