Ammonia in tap water?
I did an ammonia test using sera test kit on my house tap water. It turns green which indicate there ammonia in my tap water?
After I did a 50% WC from tap directly with water conditioner and did a ammonia test on my tank water. It is still green. It is suppose to be like that? How do I know that the ammonia from my tank is from the tap water or the food waste from the GF? Is there a correct way to check the ammonia level in tank? Can someone share their knowledge and experience, I confused here. Thanks |

you may call PUB and check with them why there is ammonia in your tap water.

Look like Chloramine is the cause of ammonia present in tap water. Water conditioner should have remove all chloramine. So in my case where ammonia still found after 50% WC seems to indicate that my BB is not well established yet. BTW, anyone try API Ammo Lock before. The product stated that it locks up Ammo in non-tonix form. Does it means that it converts the free ammonia which is toxic to ionized ammonia? |

But how often you wanna add these chemical to counter your ammonia problem? The best solution is still having a mature working filter for that tank. There's no short cut in keeping fish and also not having ammonia in the tank.

What water conditioner do you use? And how long has your tank been setup?

Fully agreed, a mature working filter is the long term solution. I already stop feeding my GF and will monitor the progress of ammonia level in couple of days. Will do some small amount WC to reduce the ammonia if necessary and give the filter time to get more stable.

Feeding 5 times a day with small amount each time Reduce filter system to just jap mat and do more WC etc It likely due to my inexperience, back to square one after one yr. Recently bought a few more adult ranchu before CNY and the jap mat filter may be underperform. Now I just want to get the filter system back to stable with addition BioHome and just feed my GF 2-3 times per day. |
