If you just got your crayfish, just wait for it to moult... Usually the ones that come in are bred in a tank with muddier substrates, thus the dirt deposits...

Depends on whether you're talking about cheraxes or procambaruses... The easiest for cheraxes is you flip them around... Look at the third leg near the body... If you see a "hole" there, it's a female... A male has 2 small protruding parts on the last pair of their legs...

For procambaruses, you flip them around... There at the middle of their underside, if you see 2 somewhat looking like "protruding bones" leading from the bottom to the third leg, it's a female... A male "protruding bones" link only to their last legs...

Hope this helps...

By the way, males usually have much larger claws than females, unless the male lost his claws previously...

Bro,

Thanks for your valuable feedback on identifying my cray !
Also i believe it is a female and she has completely eaten her old shell.

Have also added in crushed egg shells ( boiled for 5 minutes and removed the membrane ) to increase the PH.

But curious to know if 40% change monthly / bi-monthly is adequate ?
I am currently doing 20% weekly.

Happy Craying !

Largely depends on how big your tank is... Changing 40% monthly is an average guide to maintain its pH levels and hardiness... If you're comfortable with doing a 20% change weekly, it should be okay...

Crayfish react very quickly to water conditions that they are not favourable with... Just look out for certain erratic behaviour, or if they suddenly start curling up, then something is wrong... When you chage the water, keep the used water for a day first... If the crayfish looks funny, just pull out 20% of the tank water and replace it with the old...
