Default Dejan Lovren fitness latest

Dejan Lovren will not play in Liverpool’s meeting with Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday and is unlikely to be fit until after the international break.

Centre-back Lovren missed the Reds’ opening two Premier League matches due to a pelvic issue and Jürgen Klopp expects him to be absent for this weekend’s match and next Saturday’s trip to Leicester City.

However, the manager hopes the Croatia defender remains on schedule to be available following next month's international fixtures.

Klopp said: “Dejan is coming closer but he is not really around team training in the moment. I’m not 100 per cent sure what he is doing today because we are the day before the game, so he will not be involved in that [Brighton] game.

“I’m pretty sure no chance for the Leicester game and then hopefully after the international break he will be ready to go. That would be nice.

“That was actually the target from the first day when he was in and we knew about his problems, and we always thought if we can give him that time, if he could come through that time, that would be cool.”

Default 'Age is no issue for James Milner'

James Milner has the ability and the attitude to play at the top level until his late 30s, according to Jürgen Klopp.

The Liverpool vice-captain started the season in excellent form, producing an influential performance in the 4-0 win over West Ham United before opening the scoring in Monday’s 2-0 success at Crystal Palace.

At his pre-match press conference on Friday, the manager was asked if Milner is still improving at 32 and replied: “Since I worked together with him it was always fine, always good.

“He started in different positions and we played different systems, then he played full-back. Now he plays in a midfield role. All our players are influential, that’s how it should be.

“For Millie, age is for sure no issue – he is an absolutely naturally skilled boy, he really is such a sports guy; he could probably do each kind of sport he tries, he’d be good in.

“Age is no problem. In all parts of life, at 32 if you are in any company in the world they tell you to wait a few years until you can get a real job.

“In football it sounds like they are already close to retirement. It’s not too far away but there are players who can play until 36, 37, even 38.

“Because of his physical abilities, I’m pretty sure he’s one of them, if he’s lucky enough with injuries, which I wish him. The end is not to see and his desire to improve is exceptional.

“So, a very good player. If it’s the best moment of his career, maybe better ask him than me because he was always part of his career and I wasn’t.”

Default Klopp on whether Reds will remain unchanged v Brighton

Jürgen Klopp has yet to decide whether he will field an unchanged line-up for a third successive game when Liverpool take on Brighton & Hove Albion at Anfield on Saturday evening.

The Reds fielded the same starting XIs in the victories over West Ham United and Crystal Palace to begin the 2018-19 Premier League season with a perfect record.

However, Klopp admits the strength of the squad at his disposal means it is possible changes could be made for the visit of the Seagulls.

He told his pre-match press conference: “We will see. That must always be an option and we’ve had enough sessions.

“I don’t think it makes sense to only stick to a team because we won, [although] that’s the most important thing.

“We have quality in the squad and there can be different reasons to change the line-up, so that’s possible of course.”

Default Klopp explains Fabinho wait

Jürgen Klopp has explained the factors that have led to a delay in summer signing Fabinho making his competitive debut for the club.

The midfielder was an unused substitute on the opening day against West Ham United and was then not part of the matchday squad at Crystal Palace earlier this week.

Klopp confirmed at Selhurst Park that the No.3’s absence was not due to injury and, ahead of today’s home clash with Brighton and Hove Albion, offered further detail.

“It is about players understanding the position and who else is available as well – otherwise Fabinho would have been involved in the squad, as he was in the first week,” said the manager.

“That is it. It is different football to what he is used to but he is improving already with big steps. I can see that in the sessions and that is cool.”

Comparisons have been drawn with the initial weeks of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Andy Robertson’s Liverpool careers a year ago.

Then, the new recruits had to bide their time before breaking into the starting XI – and Klopp pointed to their experiences as inspiration for Fabinho.

“You see Andy Robertson running around here at Melwood now and he’s a completely different person to the one who was here in the first three months. That’s how it is, but everything will be fine,” he said.

“Fabinho is used to playing at a high level in France. It is not about who we play but about how we play. For sure it is not nice for a new player. It never was but it is all fine.”

Default Stats: Alisson aiming to emulate Bruce, Pepe and Simon...

Alisson Becker is yet to concede a goal in his fledgling Liverpool career and could join an elite list if he achieves another clean sheet in Saturday's home clash with Brighton and Hove Albion.

The Brazil international helped the Reds beat West Ham United 4-0 on the opening weekend of the 2018-19 Premier League season and followed that with a 2-0 win at Crystal Palace on Monday night.

Only three Liverpool goalkeepers in the last 51 seasons have kept a clean sheet in each of the opening three league games of a campaign - Bruce Grobbelaar, Pepe Reina and Simon Mignolet.

Alisson will emulate them if the Reds can keep out a Brighton side who failed to score in 12 of their 19 Premier League away fixtures last season and lost 4-0 on their previous visit to Anfield.

Liverpool have won each of the last five fixtures against Brighton in league and cup competitions.

The Reds are unbeaten in the last seven clashes and have scored 26 times in those meetings with the Seagulls.

The next goal scored will be the 100th in all league and cup meetings between the clubs, while the Reds are five short of recording 50 in league encounters.

Dominic Solanke and Andy Robertson netted their first goals for Liverpool in the 4-0 win against Brighton on the final day of last season.

Summer signing Xherdan Shaqiri scored for Stoke City last season against Brighton in a 1-1 home draw.

Sadio Mane has scored 14 goals in his last 19 appearances for Liverpool in all competitions. Should he find the net in this game it will be the first time he has scored in four successive matches for the Reds.

In the 14 Anfield meetings with Brighton in all competitions Liverpool have scored 38 times, conceding 12.

Brighton boss Chris Hughton, who also had spells at Newcastle United and Norwich City, has lost all five previous meetings with Liverpool as a manager, conceding 24 goals.

Twenty-two of Liverpool's last 35 wins in all competitions have been by at least a three-goal margin.

Klopp on his guard

Liverpool beat Brighton 5-1 and 4-0 last season, but Klopp is on his guard.

Not least as Brighton beat Manchester United 3-2 last week.

“Brighton were absolutely brilliant against Manchester United,” he says in the matchday programme. “Typically, most of the coverage after the match focused on the team that had lost, but that did a total disservice to Chris Hughton’s side.

“It wasn’t about what United didn’t do - it was all about what Brighton did do, and to be honest any side in the league would have struggled to compete with them on that level of performance.

“It sends a clear warning to us.”
