Bro your 173 no doubt has the 173 pattern but seriously lacking on the horizontal strips on the dorsal n caudal. One may argue asthey grow they broken lines will join but from wat i see, even young 173s i saw posted in fb finnages stripes r unlike yours.

Too bad i find it hassle to upload photo in forum if not i will share photos for reference.

Nonetheless good work in raising ur fries.

Hey bro, appreciate your view on my L173. Able to share link of your search from fb? I believe everyone here would like to view/learn as well.

Am I right to say this juvenile fits your detail on L173?

You see, what L-number to give, I don’t know. What matters and most importantly it is clearly not an authentic L173. I will explain further.
From what I see, the fish is most likely resulted from more than 1 L-number, whether created by you or the seller who sold you the fishes (breeding stocks). Its genes are adulterated with other Hypancistrus genes which can be seen in the picture itself.
To an untrained eye, it may pass off as a true L173, heck, I may probably agree many years back. The reason is back then we were still not exposed to that many types of Hypancistrus yet and online references are not that widespread. However, now I can be very certain that there is something else inside.
Another point to note is that you are not sure or certain of how a true L173 should look like yourself. This can be seen by the fact that you randomly posted pictures of your juvenile fishes hoping that one of them may fit the description of a true L173. The fact that there are so many variations in the brood further validated what I mentioned earlier. So this may lead to two things: (1) you were sold Hypancistrus labelled as L173 without knowing they are real or not; or (2) you have hybridized this “L173” you bought with another Hypancistrus.

I kinda agree with what bro nutx mentioned. It is very difficult to get a colony of authentic L173. Overseas breeder do have real L173 juveniles for sale, but buyers need to check on the integrity of the seller. However, to get a colony of authentic wild caught L173 is an entirely different thing. First or all they are not readily available and if they are probably in a small number each season. Even wild caught L173 need to be screened from other potentially similar looking fish.
One thing to note is that L173 “Glaser” aka (L173b) is a totally different Hypancistrus altogether and not to be associated with L173 at all.
I apologize for the long post as this is important in my opinion as I do not wish hobbyist to be misled and ended up spending thousands of dollars to finally getting something else.
