Default type of filter!

hi everyone! my tank is coming along ok. added some plants recently and letting them grow. will post pic soon. now, here is where i need HELP! some of the bros here said my tank's filter is too small. i have decided to buy a new and bigger filter. what should i buy? should i buy a canister filter? if so, why and which one? thank you for all the help!!

btw, the tank is a 10mm 4x1.5x1.5 tank.

to be extremely honest, i have no idea yet. i have narrowed it down to either altum angels, cardinal tetra, congo tetra, rainbow fishes (the lil blue ones), community of small fish or harlequin rasbora and perhaps some corys to go along with all that. not decided. sort of thinking hard before putting down the cash. i've already got some prawns, a few whiptails, a pleco, one clown loach and a few polka dot loach.
