those are called biofilms. biofilm can consists of both good and bad bacteria. again hor, biofilms serve beneficial purposes in the natural environment or engineered biological systems. for eg. biofilms are responsible for removal of dissolved and particulate contaminants from natural streams and in waste water treatment plants (fixed film biological systems such as trickling filters, rotating biological contactors, and fluidized beds). biofilms again, in natural water, called mats, frequently determine water quality by influencing dissolved oxygen content and by serving as a sink for many materials.

reasons for the formation of biofilms may be due to...
1. too much nutrients(ammonia, nitrites, nitrates, food debris etc.
2. ...........................

I have it too, i think it is the slimy stuff of the goldfish, not algae i think. Goldfish are extremely slimy compare to other fishes. Correct me if i m wrong.

This one I am not so sure. When I was keeping GF, I always buffer my tank. Did not encounter this problem. Now keeping arowana, without buffering found the white film stuff that you mentioned happening.

From Bro Xeroviz reply, too much nutrient, ammonia, nitrite and stuff cause this problem. I can only derive that at PH above 7 which I always buffered with GF, BB is more active thus did not give this problem.

Anybody else can shed some light ?
