Default New PAP Candidate - Dr Puthucheary

Saw this article on Temasek Review and just for sharing.....

Dr Puthucheary, saving babies is different from serving NS
April 4th, 2011 | Author: Ng Kok Lim
Dear Dr Puthucheary,

I refer to the 31 Mar 2011 Straits Times report of your answer to the criticism that you didn’t serve national service. You said you spent ten years saving kids’ lives. In that case, would you champion for all those who qualify for medical school to be exempt from national service since they would be saving lives for the rest of their lives? How about those who would go on to become paramedics? They too would be saving lives. How about future firemen who would save lives from fire and other dangers? How about would be counsellors who would save the lives of those who have given up hope? How about future teachers who would shape, nurture and mould lives?

The list is endless. If you think that saving lives entitles one to skip national service, you would be opening up a Pandora’s box to countless others who would be similarly excused from national service. You don’t have to strive so hard to convince Singaporeans that you will stay and fight. Until that day comes, no one really knows who will stay and fight. Even MM Lee didn’t fight when the Japanese came. But he did stay to work for the Japanese.

Thank you

Ng Kok Lim

If medical professionals arn't paid so well, would he still take that route??

A lot of foreign doctors (from less developed nations) are only doing coding (kind of data entry) jobs in the hospitals. WHY? Simply because the pay here as a coder is better than an average doctor in their own countries. It's the money, not the love of saving.

How many pple would give up the money for their love of others? How many Dr Lily Neo is there, who would give up her increment in MP allowance to her ward?

Even MM LEE wouldn't give up his ivory tower and said he will return from his grave (i say, cremate him instead).

MM Lee worked as a japanese translator (during WWII) if i'm not wrong, while he was selling glue in the black market at the same time. Happened to read in wiki and shared here sometime ago (they ammended/removed those info, that is deem to show e other side of him?).

this Dr Puthu
did he stay or go on leave during SARS?
that would be an acid test of his allegiance to the Hippocratic Oath.

I am proud to say that most Singaporean doctors stood by their posts & carried on during SARS when other countries had deserters.

Sad to see this,as ppl are in to get money, if a person really love his country ,he wont leave and as some countries they even accept u back as citizen even if u have give up before, india is one of them .Actually india need more doctors in rural areas where ppl are poor,he can save more lives there. Not in sg where u see only ppl with money to get medical help.Sad ....
When theres war or problem, u will aslo see who will run first ,its obvious,sad...
