Opposition parties still locked in debate
3 GRCs have attracted interest from more than one party, while 8 SMCs not resolved
By Kor Kian Beng and Andrea Ong

OPPOSITION parties remain locked in dispute over who gets to contest where at the next election, despite a second pow-wow on Saturday.

Singapore Malay National Organisation (PKMS) secretary-general Nazem Suki told reporters that three of the 15 group representation constituencies (GRCs) have each attracted interest from more than one opposition party.

These are the Chua Chu Kang, Jurong, and Moulmein-Kallang GRCs, said Mr Nazem, who chaired the three-hour meeting of 10 opposition parties.

He also disclosed that opposition representation in eight of the 12 single-member constituencies (SMC) remains unresolved.

This is because each is being eyed by two or more parties - a reflection of the more competitive opposition scene today, with more parties and candidates in the fray.

The single-seat wards concerned are Yuhua, Pioneer, Punggol East, Sengkang West, Radin Mas, Whampoa and Hong Kah North.

Wont happen... In Singapore, gov can do anything, we commoners can only rant on it. They won't be removed from office or appointment. They have immunity token, they are survivors. We just LL b'cos we have 1 party government.

'Winning GRC will be psychological blow to PAP'
By Alicia Wong | SingaporeScene – Fri, Mar 25, 2011 2:08 AM SGT

Opposition veteran Chiam See Tong says capturing a group representation constituency (GRC) at the upcoming General Elections will be a "big psychological blow" to the People's Action Party.

It would show that the GRC is "no longer an impregnable fortress," said the MP for Potong Pasir.

Speaking to the media at his Meet-the-People session on Thursday night, Chiam, 76, was responding to Deputy Prime Minister Wong Kan Seng's comments on Wednesday. DPM Wong questioned the opposition parties' motives for wanting to win a GRC in the next GE.

"Some say, well, we want to do that for renewal, and there are others who say, well, they want to be the first one to break through into a GRC and win a GRC," said DPM Wong.

But this should not be what the election is about, said the DPM..

Said Chiam, "We're not that small-minded. Any step that the Opposition does that's against the ruling party, I think that's one step forward for the voters."

To DPM Wong's call to reveal their candidates and not short-change voters, Chiam responded, most Singaporeans already know the Opposition candidates.

"(The) Opposition likes to talk a lot, they inadvertently reveal the names of the candidates," he said, adding that he announced his candidacy for Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC a year ago.

As for the rest of his team, Chiam said, "You'll know when the time comes."

He is currently in talks with other opposition parties, "and we're going to have a team when the time comes".

Chiam, who maintained he is fit enough to contest in the coming GE, also spoke of his sportsman background during his school days and shared his current exercise regime.

He has a trainer who goes to his home once a week, and he cycles half an hour daily. He also follows his wife, Lina Chiam, on her visits around Potong Pasir.

"Of course, I'm not 100 per cent fit, there's still remnants of the stroke which I suffered, but I can manage, I'm certain of that," he said.

--------------------
Don't Mr DPM Wong know Singaporeans asking about his motives for being thick skulled and sticking on after his minister let slip a 'pai kar' terrorist from a high security ISA prison??

Why not he be man enough to gracefully bow out than continue kicking dust?

Oh Mr DPM, the people's call goes onto the walls huh.... of all people to comment, why him?

Year in, year out ...... opposition does the same thing during elections but yet they expect a different outcome ..... they expect the electorate to have an awakening ...... that the people will either wake up from their slumber or the younger generation to have a different mindset and vote the opposition .... I dunno but deep inside, I dun think it's gonna work
