Wat's worse... synspilum now no more because they say same as melanurus and becos the melanurus name was invented earlier it is the more correct name and therefore adopted.

I tell u... the 2 are very very different... from actual experience. Even type locality of melanurus also different in colour forms. Sometimes u wonder those scientists really down there do wat... just wanna publish for songz or wat u down there knn. Their conclusion was largely driven by a presumption tat flower marking straight or not... then they proceed to count the scales and do the morphometrics... and u wonder wat size fish they measure... and did they consider sexual differences... and so many other question they start will flower bends straight or bend u wanna laugh.

Okok... they did mitochondria DNA... and put it on a dendogram... and say same same not very different. We also also just 3 % different from rats... put us on a dendogram also same same.

So... I tell u now... even at fry stage i know they different. Melanurus Lago Peten fry bigger than synspilum Laguna Bacalar fry. This mean almost certainly egg size bigger. Ofcos size of parent fish can play part... they were grown from around same time same size.

2, at one inch, we as novices... can readily identify Lago Peten and Bacalar juveniles. At 2 inch it becomes unmistakable... need we go further?

So... I am reluctant to change things here and there... or to be scientifically correct... watever tat means... Cichlasoma lah.. heros lah.. watveu... and i feel type locality is the better and only way for now... to describe wat u have in ur tanks.

Descriptive typing? Bacalar fries i think can be loosely described as synspilum "gold form"... while those from lake Peten err... melanurus "tomato". Ha... sounds a bit funny... their colour really can be like swimming tomato. Ha...
Scientists keep changing the genus. But for hobbyist like us, we still like to refer to synspilum and melanurus. The color and body shape are so much different to our naked eyes. DNA? that one we can't see. Maybe some days they change again.
