Firstly, you going to decide how many and what fish you going to keep.

If you keeping single Aro, 2ft height will be more than enough.
If plan to com with other fishes, example top, middle and bottom fishes. 2.5ft or 3 ft will be good.

To really grow Aro or monster fishes, length of the tank will be more important compare to height

Mine 2.5ft but after some time I prefer 2ft height.
Maintaincence for 2ft is more easier.

The only reason you should even consider 2ft is solely because of you.
- Easier tank bottom maintenance,
- Decor/ Planted/ Gravel etc etc

Basically, as long as you have a "need" to make sure your hands can reach the bottom of the tank without your rear hanging out like a donkey's ass, 2 ft would be sufficient for you..

2.5ft?
Well, it does everything in the favor of the fish.
The 2 main factors being water volume(more stable water parameters) & growth space for your pet..

Either way, length & breath always take top priority followed by height. You seem to have the fundamental basic right for the 1st two, the last choice is really just a luxury to have.

Hope you make a well informed decision bro, cheers.

for the same 5ft length, a 2.5 height would make the tank look more squarish than a 2ft height, which would look more rectangular. thus creating the bigger tank look.
