The sponge attached does not even have to touch the water surface, it consolidates the water into 1 single smooth stream. And if you meant the noise from each OHF tray, just stuff each tray so full of media and lay them in uniformed formation that there's no height for to the water to make noise at all lol. Here's an adhoc illustration as i'm lazy to take photo :



and there's no fishy smell in an established OHF, it'll smell like sweet earth, not smelly at all

thanks. so far things are still fine... and frankly i am not worried at all, but when it comes to choosing tankmates i'll nv pick those like bichirs or plecos, they are more likely to be at risk of getting bitten by the fahaka for a 'testbite'
