I spoke with a popiah stall owner before. He was from the old Lakeview hawker center, and till now it's my fav popiah. Not that it's the best but I still like his popiah most.

He shared, why some hawkers are 'arrogant' is because when they get too busy, speed is essential. So they have no time to talk, nor do they have so called energy to be friendly. They just want to get things done fast.

So if we look at their point, it may explain their arrogance.

Based on what you had said....it does make sense.

Hv not try the popiah stall at Tiong Bahru. Is it from the same carrot cake stall?

My no. 1 fav popiah stall was from the old long hse at Jalan Besar Stadium....then it moved to the Lavender hawker centre....now not sure where it is after they had moved out from there too. If anyone kn, pls share share.

My fav now is at Dunman Hawker Centre opposite the shell petrol kiosk. OMO too at level 2, same same as the famous rojak.

Still hoping to find one good one in the west. If yes then no need to travel to the East liao. Hehehehe

Thumbs up

Very good chendol, but the treacle like gula melaka thickness spoils the ecstasy.

Up to now, four seasons remains top in my list.

Another two possible contenders, both closed today.

As in, gluey caramel texture kind of thickness? That's like copying that famous shop in Jonker Walk (Melaka), which I find is overdone and not nice at all.

Malay styled chendol I tried in Johor (behind Southern City) comes across more 'pale' in taste. They mix coconut milk and the chendol (green worms) together, but cooconut is diluted. However, the whole combination with their gula melaka, just just subtle and nice, not like those overly done in bad taste 'glue-la melaka' in some wanna be special shops.

Just went Melaka over the weekend and tried 3 chendol stalls at a go...

First stall is my favorite. Number One Kopitiam. The stop is on the left side, directly opposite the famous chicken rice shop (not farmosa). A bowl cost RM4. Gula melaka taste nice and right, not artificially sweeten with white sugar like others.

Second stall tried was that famous stall among Singaporeans.... Jonker 88. A bowl cost RM4.25 (0.25 being gst). Ok, so, it was famous, very well liked... gula melaka was gluey to a fault and taste artificially sweet (likely white sugar added). Gula melaka taste was faint and lacking. So it's good? Maybe perceived value goes up when everyone says it's good or when you got to go thru some inconvenience for it. Not me.

Third stall was that Farmosa shop. A bowl cost RM5 but it's pathetic!!! I struggled to swallow simply because I hate wasting food. It was wasted calories, total crap, NO gula melaka taste, coconut milk was in shortage, chendol worm was frozen like (hard and icy due to the cold bowl). It's a disaster to chendol!!! Seriously, is this crap even, chendol????

Regretted it! RM0.50 I also won't be keen. I even dare to think, if Lorkon eat this he will curse and swear. Maybe even throw the whole bowl than force down his throat.
