suggest you allocate enough "defence budget" to the lightset

buy fan if you want the plants to look nicer.

for non CO2 tank, first you need low light, around 1.5-2 WPG. Second you need to choose the right plant that survive in low light condition. All the plants suggestion above can be use.

i set up a simple planted tank with java ferns, anubias, and amazon swordplant. no CO2, just lots of sunlight and fish. but theres a prob with algae, which i couldnt solve even with anti nitrate. just my 2 cents, im just a beginner too.

sunlight with no CO2, no fertlilizer with anti nitrate some more, no wonder you have algae.

In planted tank, what you need to focus is make sure your plant grow healthy and algae will stay away. It start with the light the more intense the light the more nutrient and CO2 needed. You use the brightest light source in the solar system and yet you deprive them from nutrient and CO2.

on the other hand algae is simple life form, it is almost imposible to deprive them. Thus when your plant is not healthy, they will quickly take over.
