SINGAPORE: Environment Minister Vivian Balakrishnan said it is important to look at how to nurture and select Singapore's next generation of hawkers.

He was asked to elaborate on the government's plans to build ten new hawker centres at a community event on Sunday.

Mr Balakrishnan said: "It's not as if anyone can just walk off the street and say I'm going to make the world's best char kway teow.
There's an element of training, exchanging of best practices and recipes.
And we need in a way to professionalise our hawker centres and our hawkers.
"


In order to make sure hawker centres remain viable in the long run, Dr Balakrishnan said the hawkers must be Singaporeans.

With the new hawker centres, he said the government will also look at creating opportunities and jobs for the low income group.

A 19-member panel appointed by the Environment and Water Resources Ministry is spearheading the public consultation exercise for ideas on what the hawker centre of the future should be like.

Dr Balakrishnan said several MPs have approached him to request for new hawker centres in their wards but he did not reveal the possible locations.

He better make sure,
- no outsourcing, NEA or HDB fully manage rental
- the rental is cheap
- it is not sublet out.
- no foreigners taking stalls

Else defeat the purpose.

Good jobs to foreigners, Singaporeans become hawkers

U read the part aft where i bold...

Only this statement i can nod head to.. the part aby nuturing... i dunno wad 2 say..

I saw that.. That's what they claimed. End up, if they don't monitor subletting, we will still see foreigners, eg chinaman.

They might as well look at the poor, let them hv a chance to make a living.

I don't quite agree on this.

Singapore is a eating city.
we should try or open to other culture food and not restrict to 1 country food.
This is killing the food eating culture.

They can control number of foreigner taking up the stall. Like they only can sell their local food but not those commonly see in Singapore.
Like , chicken rice, char kway teow or mee siam don't want hum.

Don't forget.. first generation hawker goes to work as hawker.. how many is due to like cooking? Most of them is b'coz of living.

As this generation is aging. Pass away one, pass away one. Old liao one, old liao.
How many of their child took over their parent business.

My grandfather open coffee shop one. He has almost / nearly 10 children but only my father took over his skill, make coffee. But running business in Singapore is not that easy.
Long hr
hard work.
As he is getting aging.. long hr standing is killing him.

And none of his children know how to make coffee.

I only know how to drink coffee... lol

Nurture.. yes.
professionalise .. to me.. this is another way to get more money. It mean more course. More certification. More money to Cheng Hu

would it help if the minister opens by saying, " i would like to apologize abt my previous statement on eating in a restaurant vs hawker centre during the debate abt increasing social/public assistance. i didn't mean to to potray being a hawker as demeaning or increasing government assistance by a few tens of dollars as exhorbitant."?

can people be taught to care?

some thing, esp. small businesses, must be organic, not top down. what's killing local fares is over regulation, and they still want to come up with all these.
