Default How to prepare hatch BBS(Baby Brine Shrimp) from eggs

Hi there, although there are many links on the web to teach us how to hatch BBS from eggs, here is a lazy man way with no measurement needed and it works for me

1) You need a 1.5L soda water bottle (I used Pokka green tea bottle as the bottle is harder)with the base removed.

2) add in around 3 teaspoons of salt or fill salt to around the cap area (I used normal cooking salt that I got from the supermarket, $0.20 each pack)

3) Add in tap water (no anti-chlorine added for me because I seldom used that for my fish, if you feel that you need to add, just add in)

4) Add in the BBS eggs

5) Cover the top if you don't want salt water to splash out when you bubble the solution. Start with low "power" bubbling to allow most of the eggs to be soaked in water

(6) Increase the bubbling "power" till you see that there are no dead zone, that is there is no eggs settle at a location

Here is a video of the bubbling "power" to show you roughly how it should look like

After 20-24 hours

(7) Turn off the air supply and let the bbs and eggs to settle
wait...

wait..

and wait..

and wait... around 10 mins later most of the bbs should have settle down..

(8) this is how I harvest the BBS. Siphon out the BBS with airline tube into the coffee filter.

(9) Wait for all the water to flow through and you will see this orange stuff

(10) Clean the bbs with tap water... and put in another container for feeding..

yes that is different .
it is those transparent piping that you can easily get from LFS.
use "balloon stick" also can.

Thanks for the instructional post and it dispels the stories of some who mentioned they are having difficulty hatching the BBS. We will find this very useful for our needs.

For me, the use of air stone will result in some bbs eggs being stuck right at the bottom and the air from the air stone will not be powerful enough to propel them up from the bottom. Putting an air tube with its tip right at the bottom and turning up the aeration to a level will ensure the eggs do not get stuck there.

I've read somewhere that using airstone is not advicable, so from start I never use airstone.

Eggs = Hatched (floating)
Eggs = Unhatched (sink at bottom)

BBS swimming everywhere (mostly at the middle, some at top and bottom, attracted to bright lights)

No need for airstone as mentioned earlier in the thread. You need the strong bubbling to prevent any eggs from sinking at the bottom which may not hatch in the end.

If you want to put upside down from cap, you would need to design a hanging bottle (Can see from some LFS) rather than sitting type.

Actually siphoning is the more challenging step.
Have the correct size of netting to trap BBS. Personally, I use this box:
http://www.arofanatics.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=486349
Although this is not the best method... My set up is about same as bro fireblade.
1) Siphon the top layer of floating hatched eggs shell a few rounds with net(for boon).
2) Pour slowly later into the box, while unhatched eggs are at bottom.
3) Fill the box with water, wait awhile and some un-netted floating hatch eggs shell will be floating in the box.
4) Use Daiso purchased sucktube to suck the top floating shell one more round.
5) Feed the BBS to the fishes....

As i mentioned, this is my own method and may not be the best. I am happy with doing it twice a day now. Until I am able to get a double filter netting to trap eggs from bbs (currently no LFS is selling except in Taiwan..)
