I was about to ask the same question on this matter. It appears once in a while on my other panaques as well. Usually goes off after a while hence I was not too bothered but lingering question is in my mind. Any bros have any answer to this question? Thanks

Seems to me like they are brushing against the tank causing the marking.

I'd be blaming it on wood/rocks more than I would on the glass.
For a fish to get friction burn from rubbing the glass it would have to be constantly rubbing or swimming against it. You'd for sure notice this behavior.

I see scrapes on my guys bellies and noses from time to time and I know it's caused by bumping the wood or rocks.

Bro, Thanks for sharing and solving the mystery. So no cause of concern right?

Nope, only if the area becomes infected or alike. The snout often gets marked or discoloured since it's usually the first point of contact for the fish.

I have seen behaviour in a Panaque nigrolineatus where it would rest with it's snout jutting above the water level. It eventually became discoloured (white/grey) but it resolved itself when I stopped it from happening.
