Forget wat they say... general consensus cannot be achieved when u know for sure what u see is something different altogether.

P. synspilum was redescribed as the junior synonym of P. melanurus.
The ones found in Rio Sarstun was originally described as P. synspilum whereby
the other variant (orange form) living in Lago Peten was named P. melanurus.
Now having described to be the same, they just differ due to their locality.

actually if you see from pictures, the black marking on both fishes are rather similar, not to say that within each locality the black marking is already so variable. the only main difference is coloration.

Seeing as my date just stood me up... a little on these people calling other people to follow... haiz... poor thing really.

What define a distinct specie?... Ok, the icthys do their standard routine... fin count scale count measure here measure there and when they r the same u declare same species?... Sub-standard.

Before I go any further... colour difference in itself can almost qualify... if not entirely qualify distinction. An example, victorian laps... u can find them over a range of littoral zones... some deeper, with deeper colouration... some shallower, with brighter colouration. Nile perch went in presumbably to solve human starvation problem. Chopping trees and agriculture runoffs souped up the lake making a unique stratified layer of murk and nutrient blooms. Niles eat up and eat down... and some labs from both the up and down layers found murky niche... some crossed and some morphed to blend in... overtime... if the niles are gone... things may return to normal... or not... and new species would have evolved in that time.

Perhaps they will persist, perhaps they will vanish once stratified layer gone... with predatory docile friendly mopping them up... wat is sure... things will never be the same.

Opps... my date horny liao... more to say but...

Anyway, what constitute a distinct specie?...

Not sure how far this spawn is going to last... in any case... I'll leave them until next saturday... no guarantee brood will survive though male is fending aggressively driving everyone to corners while the female guard eggs... and if I travel... no guarantee as well.

I'll probably update when they eyed... and u can pretty much get yourself ready.

Remember, max till next saturday... about halve brood... no guarantees...
