If as long as the algae's technically not in the pond, how about an "algae scrubber" setup? (google for "algae scrubber")

If you'd prefer a flora option, how about lots of floating plants (duckweed, lotus, etc) to "shade" the pond from strong sunlight, or even pandan plants.
