I use both sponge and ohf for one of my tank setup. Usually, I change 50% water every other day and it is a good option for me as I may be travelling for a week so ohf can help with maintaining the water quality for a bit longer. Once I'm back, I will perform 50% wc every day for at least 3 days before going back to my regular routine.

Using OH filter for discus should not be a problem if you maintain it well by washing or cleaning the filter layer regularly especially when feeding heart meals if any.
How often do you change your water, food type , bioload, wash/change filter wool? |

Im not pro in fish keeping.. and also new to discus.. but still.. i'll try to answer.
Is a 3ft tank anyway... Q)How often do you change your water, A) As long the water lev drop,, i'll top it up to my desire level.. but every month i 'll do a 1/3 water change... Food type juz normal pellet and frozen blood worm. ( ice cube form juz throw in ) Bioload = coral chips and ceramic ring only.. Wash filter wool every week or 2. ( juz rinse ) stack in a few layer... I only change the top wool when it gets dirty... Every month when i do 1/3 water change, i'll rinse the medias? thats all.. Lucky so far, my fish are free from disease using above... discus n arro.. alibaba style..... lol |

As others have mentioned, sponge filters for discus are common due to the frequent water changes performed. Hence simple mechanical filtration in the form of sponge filters are widely used due to the ease of daily maintainence.
OHFs are primarily used for wet dry trickle filtration, which is a form of biological filtration. Using OHFs will not directly cause cloudy eye. What probably happened was the build up of waste in ur OHF which resulted in high ammonia / nitrite / pH crash (less likely since u used coral chips.. but if u didnt use enough it could still happen) because u did not cycle your tank properly. |

I change water every 2 days...day 1 FBW. With pallets after they have cleared all FBW...2nd day heart meals...then 100% water change I off my overhead power head during every meals...so that no leftover will be sucked into it. But I just don't understand why the cloudy eyes. |
