This is Anfield

Thomas Tuchel was once again floored by a last minute winner at Anfield last night - and he reckons this is simply what Liverpool do at Anfield.

Thomas Tuchel has a brief but precise summary for what happened to his PSG team tonight in Liverpool: "This is Anfield, this is what they do."

Important Milner

The Telegraph’s Charlie Eccleshare reckons James Milner on course to become Liverpool’s most important player.

Milner played a crucial role in shackling Neymar at Anfield last night - as well as netting a penalty for the Reds - and is enjoying a beautifully timed renaissance to his career at Anfield.

“Performances like these have become the norm for Milner, especially in Europe where no player has more assists in a single Champions League campaign than Milner’s eight last season,” Eccleshare writes.

“The fact that Fabinho and Naby Keita - who cost a total of more than £80m this summer - can’t get a game underlines his standing in the squad.

“It’s been quite the journey for Milner over the last few years. From ‘boring James Milner’ at Manchester City, he evolved in his first three seasons at Liverpool from utility man to ersatz left-back to unsung hero.

“Now in his fourth campaign on Merseyside, Milner is fast becoming Liverpool’s most important player.”

Firmino on Eye Injury

Roberto Firmino has revealed his family played a big part in helping him recover from the nasty eye injury sustained against Spurs.

Bobby was involved in an incident with defender Jan Vertonghen during the clash at Wembley but returned to net the winner from the bench against PSG last night.

“I thank God that nothing serious happened to my eye,” Firmino told ESPN Brazil.

“It has been three days since the incident and recovery went well.

“I took it very seriously and my family helped to motivate me, I am very happy for it.

“The team showed great quality on the pitch, we conceded twice but it was a great victory in the end.

“We are working hard to achieve something important [in the Champions League].”

Be More Like Reds

PSG’s Thomas Meunier - who netted against Liverpool last night - reckons PSG should mimic the Reds’ style of play.

Liverpool came out 3-2 winners against the French champions last night but Meunier has urged his team-mates to take a leaf out of Jurgen Klopp’s tactics book.

Speaking to RMC earlier, Meunier said: “We should follow Liverpool’s example: they play simply, quickly, with lots of intensity and overlaps.

“It comes in waves, it never stops and the opponent is completely cornered. With our qualities, we can vary play, we have the players and the technical quality to do so.”

Default Dejan Lovren returns to full training

Dejan Lovren has returned to full training following a pelvis injury.

The Liverpool defender re-joined his teammates in a workout at Melwood on Wednesday afternoon following the Champions League victory over Paris Saint-Germain.

Lovren was part of the group who did not feature from the start against the French title-holders that undertook a series of drills and small-sided games in the session.

The 29-year-old, who helped Croatia reach the World Cup final in the summer, has yet to play for the Reds this term due to the issue but now comes back into contention for Jürgen Klopp.

Default James Milner up for Champions League award

James Milner has been shortlisted for the Champions League Player of the Week award – and you can vote for him to win it.

The vice-captain produced an outstanding display to help Liverpool defeat Paris Saint-Germain 3-2 at Anfield on Tuesday night in the first round of group-stage fixtures.

Indeed, Milner converted a crucial penalty to put Jürgen Klopp’s side two goals ahead in the first half.

The 32-year-old faces competition from Barcelona’s Lionel Messi, Lyon forward Nabil Fekir and Paul Pogba of Manchester United.

Default 'Sturridge summed up the spirit in our squad'

Daniel Sturridge's influence on Liverpool's win against Paris Saint-Germain was cited as the perfect example of the spirit in the squad by Andy Robertson.

With Roberto Firmino named on the bench following the eye abrasion he suffered the previous weekend, Sturridge was handed his first ever Champions League start for the Reds.

It was an opportunity the No.15 seized.

The striker’s 30th-minute opener in the 3-2 victory – a clinical header at the Kop end from Robertson’s cross – was the highlight of an industrious performance from Sturridge which showed the team-first ethic shared by every Liverpool player.

“Behind the scenes and at training we’re all hungry to go for starting places,” Robertson told Liverpoolfc.com after Firmino’s stoppage-time winner sealed three points to kick off Group C.

“Some people won’t play as much as they want, especially when it has been Saturday to Saturday and the gaffer has kind of stuck with his team.

“But we have got a lot of games coming up so everyone will be required.

“Studge sums it up – he comes on, plays 70 minutes and does unbelievably against a top side and two very good centre-backs. Credit to him and I’m sure all the boys sitting on the bench can look at him and they’ll make similar impacts when called upon.”

For the fourth Champions League appearance in a row, Sturridge was directly involved in a Liverpool goal and earned praise from Jürgen Klopp for a ‘super game’.

Firmino, meanwhile, climbed to joint-third in the all-time list of scorers in the competition for the club with his 12th – now behind only Steven Gerrard (30) and Ian Rush (14).

“Bobby got an unfortunate injury on Saturday and there’s Studge ready to go. I thought he was different class for 70 minutes, he was brilliant,” added Robertson.

“And then Bobby comes off the bench and scores. It shows you the quality we’ve got in the squad. I was delighted to get an assist and it was a great header by Studge to set us on our way.”

Firmino explains reasons behind THAT goal celebration

He said:

“It was an inexplicable pain, I’m way better now and ready to play, like you have seen! The celebration was to show I’m back to 100%” .

Spanish press give 10 reasons why they believe Reds will win the Premier League and Champions League

Liverpool’s thrilling victory over Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday didn’t go unnoticed in Spain.

The Reds beat the French champions 3-2 in a hard fought content - kick starting their Champions League campaign with a win and maintaining a perfect start in the opening six games of the season.

Jurgen Klopp’s squad will take that 100 per cent record into Saturday’s Premier League clash at home to Southampton, which will again be of particular interest to those in Spain.

Because sports publication Marca have clearly seen enough to tip Liverpool for glory this season - both at home and abroad.

Ignoring the claims of their own big two Barcelona and Real Madrid, they have come up with 10 reasons why Liverpool can win the Champions League AND the Premier League this season.

Here’s why they think it could finally be their year.

1. Their scoring power

Marca’s first reason in the Reds’ firepower, as they cite that they’ve scored 44 goals since the beginning of the last Champions League season, which is 11 more than Real Madrid and 15 more than PSG.

2. Their forwards

Next came what Marca describe as ‘the MSF trident’ of Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino.

They praise the fact that between them the trio have now scored 100 goals since the beginning of last season, with Salah on 46, Firmino 30 and Mane 24.

3. Jurgen Klopp’s evolution

Marca then praise the impact that Jurgen Klopp has had at Anfield, citing the fact that only one member of his original team lineup - for a goalless draw at Tottenham in October 2015 - is still a regular.

That’s James Milner, with plenty of others either moved on or pushed to the fringes.

4. The defence

Virgil van Dijk is then singled out for praise, with Marca saying he “has made his teammates better” as they cite the fact that the Reds haven’t conceded a goal at home in the Premier League since March.

5. Alisson’s arrival

Next up it is the goalkeeper, with Marca saying that Liverpool “spent several seasons suffering for the lack of stability between the goalposts” before signing Alisson.

It’s hard to argue.

6. The departure of Philippe Coutinho

He might be living it up in Barcelona, but Marca say that losing Philippe Coutinho was actually a good thing for the Reds.

They claim his departure has “assisted in the team’s collective high pressing style” as they single out the likes of Milner, Naby Keita and Jordan Henderson for praise.

7. Strength in depth

Marca were impressed by the fact that Klopp was able to name Daniel Sturridge in his starting lineup for the PSG game, with the forward repaying his manager’s faith by heading home the opening goal.

Xherdan Shaqiri and Fabinho are also cited as examples of why their squad is so strong.

8. Knockout knowhow

While both Klopp and Liverpool’s recent record in finals can be questioned, their ability to reach them can not, and Marca praise a manager that they say “knows how to lead his team to the last critical game of a tournament.”

9. Anfield

It might be a cliche for some, but Marca are clearly impressed with how the Anfield crowd help Liverpool’s players.

They say that “the You’ll Never Walk Alone chant intimidates Liverpool’s opponents, turning Anfield into a fortress”.

10. They want it more

Finally, Marca say that Liverpool’s desire is also what makes them stand apart from the others.

Criticising “newcomers of the continental football scene” Manchester City and PSG, they praise Liverpool’s record of reaching five European finals since their last league title in 1990.
