Gomez and Van Dijk Hailed

Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk were two of the four Liverpudlians who made it into Garth Crook’s team of the week after standout performances against Spurs.

Gomez and Van Dijk have helped the Reds to five successive victories this campaign in an unblemished start which has seen them concede just twice.

“The tackle by Joe Gomez on Lucas Moura in the second half of Liverpool’s win at Tottenham would have stopped a mail train,” Crooks said about the young defender.

“I said two weeks ago, after Liverpool’s impressive victory at Leicester, that this kid was the best defender I’ve seen in years.

“In fact I said something far more profound than that but I’m not going to repeat it for fear of jinxing the lad.

“What I will say is Gomez is a future England captain if ever I saw one.”

Crooks was also impressed by Virgil van Dijk’s handling of England captain Harry Kane, awarding him an, er, Oscar for his performance.

“Kane never had a kick,” he added. “Virgil van Dijk was too big, too strong and too composed on the ball.

“In times like these when centre-backs look imperious, strikers have to ruffle feathers and the England captain simply wasn’t prepared to have a scrap.

“Van Dijk walked on to the pitch looking like a film star and walked off with the Oscar for best leading man.”

Champions League Odds

With the Champions League rolling around for another action-packed season, Oddschecker took a look at who the bookies think will come home with the trophy.

After their dominating Premier League title win last season, Pep Guardiola’s Man City have been installed as the early favourites to win the competition at 6/1.

That’s ahead of the likes of Messi and co and Barcelona (13/2), Juventus (8/1) and PSG (8/1).

Juventus are the biggest market mover after signing Cristiano Ronaldo. They’ve had their odds slashed from 18/1 pre-CR7, into just 8/1 as of today.

Elsewhere, now perennial UCL winners Real Madrid are a lofty 8/1 to win the tournament following the loss of their leading man, followed by Bayern Munich at 10/1.

Bookies aren’t giving other English clubs not managed by Guardiola much of a chance, with the like of last year’s finalists Liverpool being touted as a 14/1 shot.

It’s not only new stadium issues that appear prevalent at Spurs, as bookies have them as long as 27/1 to capture their first ever Champions League.

Jose Mourinho’s prowess in Europe doesn’t seem to have had too much of an effect on Manchester United’s odds on going the full way – with the Red Devils being installed as a 33/1 outside shot.

Oddschecker spokesperson George Elek said: “The crème de la crème of European football get back at it tomorrow, and early indications are that bookies are backing Pep to take Man City to their first ever Champions League triumph.

“They lead the market in what looks to be an open race for Europe’s premier cup competition, with Cristiano Ronaldo having a decisive say on who bookies think will go the full way.

“Despite winning the last three, Real Madrid are no less than fifth favourites to win the competition, with Juventus being heavily backed, having their odds cut by more than half.”

Default Jürgen Klopp offers injury update ahead of PSG clash

Dominic Solanke and Divock Origi are set to be ruled out of contention to be involved in Liverpool’s Champions League group-stage clash with Paris Saint-Germain at Anfield on Tuesday.

The pair both sustained minor knocks while representing the Reds’ U23s on Saturday in a 3-0 win over Swansea City – a game in which they both scored.

Other than Roberto Firmino, there are no other fresh injury worries for Liverpool ahead of the fixture.

Speaking to Liverpoolfc.com, Klopp said: “Unfortunately yes, we have new injury concerns. We tried to give Divock and Dom a bit of practice [for the U23s]; they used it, they scored, but it looks like both of them will not be available for tomorrow.

“It’s not too serious. Div has a little bit of an ankle [injury]. He tried this morning and didn’t really work out too well, so he will try again tomorrow morning. With Dom, we have to see. He got a knock and we will see how that develops.

“So not good news in the moment, but we have a lot of players available and when I saw the players yesterday, there were not any other issues.”

Default Klopp reveals latest on Roberto Firmino injury

Roberto Firmino requires further assessment before a decision is made on his involvement in Tuesday's Champions League meeting with Paris Saint-Germain.

The Brazil international was forced off with a quarter of an hour to go in the Reds’ 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley on Saturday after sustaining an eye injury.

It was confirmed that evening Firmino had been discharged from hospital later in the day, with tests showing an abrasion but no lasting damage.

However, ongoing checks will be necessary to determine whether he can feature versus PSG, confirmed Jürgen Klopp on Monday.

Asked if the No.9 is available for the tie, the manager told Liverpoolfc.com: “No idea, to be honest. He is much better.

“We all saw the picture and we were massively worried. But all these worries are away so he will be fine. If he will be fine for tomorrow, I don’t know in the moment.

“We are obviously in close contact with him and it improved already – but in this moment I can’t say if he will be available for tomorrow.”

Fee League

Manchester City top the transfer table as the Champions League’s most valuable club, according to research from SmartBets.

City’s squad is worth just short of £800 million in transfer fees and cost more than any other side in the competition.

City head the list ahead of neighbours Manchester United, who sit second – though the Red Devils lag £113m behind, with a total transfer cost of £655.14m for their current squad.

They are followed by Liverpool’s opponents tonight PSG, who broke the world transfer record for Neymar last year, in third, and Barcelona in fourth.

The Reds’ summer spending spree gives them fifth spot in the table, with a combined value of £512.94m, with the final Premier League side, Tottenham, coming in ninth, on £294.63m.

At the other end of the scale, Czech side Viktoria Plzen are the least valuable Champions League side, with their squad costing a minuscule £3.91m.

Fourth Most Expensive Squad

Liverpool have the fourth most expensive currently assembled squad in Europe at the moment according to CIES - making Jurgen Klopp’s team worth more than Real Madrid and Barcelona!

To be fair, it’s not that surprising after spending big-money on Alisson, Naby Keita and Virgil van Dijk.

Default U19s put five past PSG in Youth League

Liverpool U19s made an outstanding start to their UEFA Youth League campaign by beating Paris Saint-Germain 5-2 on Tuesday afternoon.

Rhys Williams, Rafael Camacho (two), Bobby Adekanye and Curtis Jones scored the goals for Barry Lewtas’ side, who were simply too strong for the visitors from the off in St Helens.

The young Reds therefore set the pace in Group C of the competition, with Red Star Belgrade and Napoli playing out a 1-1 draw in the other fixture.
