Liverpool's true net spend for 2018 summer transfers revealed - including ins, outs and surprise loan clauses

Liverpool paid out £160.85million on new signings this summer with £35.75million recouped in sales.

The Reds' net spend was £125.1million based on fees that are guaranteed rather than add-ons or options that have yet to be triggered.

If all the add-ons based on appearances and success are met then Liverpool's outlay for the deals done for Naby Keita, Fabinho, Alisson Becker and Xherdan Shaqiri in the summer of 2018 will rise to £174.35million.

The figure banked for outgoings could climb to £45million if Loris Karius' initial loan to Besiktas becomes permanent. It would have been considerably higher had a number of fringe players accepted moves away from Anfield.

Liverpool agreed a £22million plus add-ons deal with Wolves for Divock Origi but the Belgium international wasn't keen on joining the Premier League new boys. Talks were held with Borussia Dortmund but they wouldn't meet the asking price and the striker ended up staying put.

Pedro Chirivella turned down a £3.5million switch to Rosenborg and Lazar Markovic's £2.9million move to Anderlecht collapsed after he failed to agree personal terms on Friday night.

Liverpool did bank a £1million loan fee from Derby County for Harry Wilson, while fellow gifted youngsters Ben Woodburn (Sheffield United), Ryan Kent (Rangers), Ovie Ejaria (Rangers) and Sheyi Ojo (Stade de Reims) were also loaned out to further their development.

Contract renewals will help ensure the players' value is protected and there will be hefty financial penalties if they don't play sufficient games. Bristol City's failure to start Kent last season is understood to have cost them around £500,000.

The ins and outs at Liverpool in the summer of 2018 and what each deal is worth.

Ins:

Alisson Becker (Roma) - £56million (potentially rising to £65million)

Naby Keita (RB Leipzig) - £52million

Fabinho (Monaco) - £40million (potentially rising to £44.5million)

Xherdan Shaqiri (Stoke City) - £12.85m

Total: £160.85million guaranteed, could rise to £174.35million

Outs:

Danny Ings (Southampton) - £18million (potentially rising to £20million) – deal will become permanent on July 1 2019 after season-long loan.

Danny Ward (Leicester City) - £12.5million

Loris Karius (Besiktas) - £2.25million loan fee (a further £7.25m if permanent move is triggered after two-year loan in 2020).

Ragnar Klavan (Cagliari) - £2million

Harry Wilson (Derby County) - £1million loan fee

Total: £35.75million guaranteed, could rise to £45million.

Net spend: £125.1million guaranteed, could rise to £129.35million

'Gomez better than van Dijk'

Former England centre-back and Match of the Day pundit Martin Keown has made some huge claims about Joe Gomez.

Gomez has so far started all four of Liverpool’s Premier League matches this season with Dejan Lovren out injured.

He has formed a solid defensive partnership with Virgil van Dijk and the Reds have only conceded one goal so far after goalkeeper Alisson was caught in possession at Leicester yesterday by Kelechi Iheanacho - though it proved to make little difference as Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino’s first half goals saw Liverpool across the line.

Vital to the win was the performance at the back and that of 21-year-old Joe Gomez who pulled off an excellent recovery late on to block James Maddison’s shot inside the box.

Speaking to Gary Lineker on MOTD, Keown said:

“He is a real talent, Gary. Today he was better than Van Dijk and that is some compliment to him. A real talent.

“His mobility, the way that he floats across the pitch, of course he’s got to be able to pass the ball now.

“They’re servers now [the Liverpool centre backs] for this front three, you’ve got to be able to punch the ball - yes he can do that. He has the technique, he has the vision.

“He has everything in his game. His block for [James] Maddison was outstanding defending.”

Gomez’s start to the season saw him called up to the latest England squad for upcoming clashes with Spain and Switzerland, the latter of which is at Leicester.

The ex-Charlton defender will hope to build on the three caps he earned for the Three Lions last season having only missed out on the World Cup due to injury.

Keown added:

“Gareth Southgate must be licking his lips to be able to work with him because he is a real talent, an immense talent, pace is everything but he’s calm in possession and looks forward.

“But it’s this pace that he has, he goes there and swats his opponent. If you put him under pressure, rarely have I seen a defender so unflustered.

“No problem, no panic, just calmness - that is a real quality. This pace he has is what I like particularly.

“Just the way he floats across the pitch in a three or a four, it doesn’t matter, he’s a top defender. Gareth must be buzzing with that one.”

Lineker himself provided his opinion on Gomez earlier on in the day, saying via Twitter:

Joe Gomez is going to be a helluva player.

Default Sadio Mane filmed cleaning toilets in local mosque in humble gesture

Sadio Mane has once again proven what a class act he is off the pitch as well as on it.

The Liverpool star has further enhanced his reputation as a model professional by helping clean the toilets and wudhu area of his local mosque.

This followed the Reds’ 2-1 victory over Leicester City at the King Power Stadium, in which Mane had opened the scoring on the way towards his side extending their winning start to the Premier League season.

Mane’s latest gesture arrives just months after he sent 300 Liverpool shirts to fans in his home town of Bambali in Senegal prior to May’s Champions League final against Real Madrid.

Mane has been Liverpool’s standout attacking threat over the opening weeks of the new campaign, registering four goals in as many games.

The Senegalese forward has been able to translate a superb individual finish to 2017/2018 into an instrumental role amid Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah’s own efforts to gradually rediscover their top form.

His consistency since his arrival at the club in 2016 has put him towards the top of the list of those in line for a lucrative contract extension, with Salah and Firmino having already penned new deals on Merseyside.

Liverpool’s no.10 is already on course to challenge his career-high 20-goal tally last season, which entailed key contributions on both the domestic and European stages.

Default Andy Robertson appointed new Scotland captain

Liverpool defender Andy Robertson has today been appointed the new Scotland national team captain.

The 24-year-old officially takes the armband ahead of the friendly with Belgium in Glasgow on Friday night and UEFA Nations League tie against Albania three days later.

Robertson has accrued 22 caps and scored two goals for his country to date, since a debut against Poland in March 2014.

The left-back has made 34 appearances for the Reds since signing from Hull City last summer and was a key figure in the run to last season’s Champions League final.

Default Fabinho taking 'big steps' towards Liverpool debut

Fabinho's wait for his Liverpool debut is likely to end soon after the international break.

The Brazil international has yet to feature competitively for the Reds following his summer switch from AS Monaco, with Jürgen Klopp fielding an unnamed team in the first three matches and making just a single change at Leicester City on Saturday.

The strength in depth available to the manager has meant no place in the matchday squad for Fabinho since the opening-weekend win over West Ham United.

But the midfielder has made significant progress in training, according to Klopp, and will be needed when Liverpool tackle a difficult run of fixtures later this month.

“The team is good and he needs time,” the boss said after the 2-1 victory at the King Power Stadium extended his side’s 100 per cent start to the season.

“He could have been in the squad, of course, but it’s quite difficult to make the squad at the moment because they are all fit.

“It’s good to have the situation as one might need a bit of time, or the others are more used to it. That’s the only reason.

“But he will come back. And now we have games every three days, and he has made big steps in the last few weeks. He could even play at the moment.”

The No.3 has since joined up with his country, alongside Reds teammates Alisson Becker and Roberto Firmino, for matches against United States and El Salvador.

“Hopefully now Fabinho has games with Brazil, and then after he comes back we have games, games, games,” added Klopp.

“We have the whole of September a lot of games, only against top teams. We need all of the players, that’s good.

“We have come through the period where it looked like we didn’t need all of them because we played quite a consistent line-up and the level in training was high. That’s all cool. Hopefully they all come back healthy as we have to use them all because of the number of games.”

Default Salah's derby stunner nominated for Puskas Award

Mohamed Salah's stunning goal against Everton at Anfield last season has been shortlisted for the 2018 FIFA Puskas Award.

The Liverpool No.11 marked his first appearance in a Merseyside derby with a sensational spin and curled finish into the top corner despite the snowy conditions.

Salah himself named the strike as one of his favourites of 44 scored in his debut campaign – and the effort was one of 10 nominated for the Puskas Award on Monday.

The winner will be decided by an online poll of fans at FIFA.com and announced at a ceremony in London on Monday September 24.

Default Mane wins PFA Player of the Month for August

Liverpool forward Sadio Mane has won the first PFA Fans' Player of the Month award of the 2018-19 Premier League season.

The Reds No.10 scored three goals in three games during August to help his team on their way to a 100 per cent start to the campaign so far.

And Mane was the overwhelming winner in a poll of fans across the country for the PFA accolade for last month, taking 58 per cent of the votes.

He finished ahead of Cardiff City’s Neil Etheridge and Watford’s Roberto Pereyra, as well as Sergio Aguero (Manchester City), Lucas Moura (Tottenham Hotspur) and Benjamin Mendy (City).

Default Salah v Modric and Ronaldo for FIFA Best Men's Player 2018

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah is on the shortlist for FIFA's Best Men's Player of 2018 alongside Luka Modric and Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Egyptian scored 44 goals for the Reds in his debut season to help the club secure a second successive top-four finish in the Premier League and reach the Champions League final.

Salah also represented his country at the World Cup, scoring twice as the Pharaohs were eliminated after the group stage in Russia.

The 26-year-old is in contention with Modric and Ronaldo for the prize after an initial 10-man shortlist was whittled down and revealed on Monday.

The winner of the honour, to be announced at a ceremony in London on Monday September 24, will be decided by the votes of fans, national team coaches and captains, and journalists.
