You can definitely use a sump tank for a 2ft tank. Unless your good at DIY, i would suggest getting a tank maker to build the tank for you. There are some tank makers around in arofanatics, can approach them to get the sump tank built.

Default Sump tank is the best

Hi,
You can easily get a used sump tank from local fish forum. Especially the marine one.

To me overflow system with sump is one of th best if not the best filtration system. With the right pump, you will find that your tank will be clearer faster.

All the advices given to you so far are very sound. You can also have the skimmer in the sump, as well as the pump, although some prefer external pump so that the heat from the pump will not go to the water.

I started my marine venture with a same size tank. I just add few pcs of glass and build an internal overflow sump filter (bout 9"), fairly easy really. So effectively I have another 39" of tank space for fishes. As this is a standard tank (6mm thick) its a bit risky but so far so good (more than 7 months already), no leakage. I even have space in the IOS to put the protein skimmer and another small pump for UV light filtering.
