Hemichromis cf Paynei - 2nd spawn

This is the 2nd successful spawn of my wild caught Hemichromis pair.

After much effort in the ID process, their closest match is the Paynei.

The lack of irridescent spots, more oval lateral spots closer to the dorsal than to the midlateral line and the golden markings on the sides of the head points to the Paynei.

Anyway ... back to the topic,

29 Feb 2012 is when the 2nd spawn occurred. Probably in the late morning or afternoon when I was away at work.

Picture of eggs taken at night.

Picture of the eggs taken on the next morning ( about 8hrs later )

Picture off eggs taken on 2nd day - about 11pm.

Note that the eyes were already form.

This morning, the eggs were all gone but te parents were taking turn guarding a certain corner in the tank, the eggs have probably developed into wrigglers.

Thanks, the base is a piece of 2x1 ft ceramic tile.

Exactly 5 days from eggs laid, the frys are free swimming now.

Mon and Dad taking turns to look after the babies
