Happened to my filter.. not really sure why also. Suspect maybe the seal has a problem? Anyway due to age, the side of my 2028 has cracked already so I don't use it anymore.

Default Eheim Canister 2028

You need to replace the head seal (square shape), which I believe has been hardened due to heat generated from the head unit.

When you power down the canister, there will be 2 back flow pressure build-up, one from the suction pipe and the other from the outlet pipe. The pressure build-up within the canister now is very much greater than when the canister is power on, that at some point the square rubber seal no longer can withstand, due to its wear and tear. Therefore leak occurs.

Hope I have answered your question.
